An EBF Novice Stakes over 5f 21y on heavy going.
Seven two-year-olds debutantes take part at Windsor: five colts and two fillies. Testing going will make this interesting.
Michael Bell doesn't have many early juveniles so it is a fair pointer Artair has something going for him. This bay colt is a son of Kodiac and £55,000 yearling purchase. Well drawn in stall three and positive jockey booking with Jamie Spencer riding.
Blown By Wind hails from Mark Johnston's stable. They have fielded a couple of juveniles who have been fancied in the betting. Neither won but far from disgraced, giving the impression they would appreciate better ground. This son of Invincible Spirit is well drawn in stall one (if the keep to the near-side rail). This home bred is out of a decent mare who raced just three times: winning on her first and second start, taking the Sweet Solera Stakes (Group 3). She was fancied in the 1000 Guineas but was virtually pulled up and never raced again so must have suffered an injury. Definitely a fair type on paper and the stable have a few to measure this ones ability.
Rod Millman has a couple of horses entered. He has unleashed a few of his better juveniles at this course over recent years so worth noting. In general, his juvenile struggle to win on debut. Greyzee is a grey son of Zebedee out of a winning but little mare. He was bought in by the vendor for £10,000.
Greeley has a wide draw in seven, which may be the best of the lot if jockeys venture to the far side rail, which is often the case of testing ground. This bay colt is a son of Sir Prancealot, who has done pretty well as a new sire these last few years. He cost £18,00 at the yearling sales.
Mick Channon has led the way with this two-year-olds this season. A Brocklesby Stakes winner who made it two from two in the mud at Bath. Bungle Inthejungle stole a win, while a couple of others have disappointed. One of two fillies, Solesmes is owned by Mick Channon and 3,000G foal. May appreciate further in time. If priced 8/1 or bigger SP, best watched.
Never one to let the grass grown under his feet, David Evans has fielded a number of juveniles this season. He has form horses to assess the ability of his newcomers which is a plus. Awake In Asia is a son of Dragon Pulse and £65,000 yearling purchase. The mare won five times and achieved a highest official rating of 91. The stable send some of their better prospects here and a horse worthy of note especially if well backed.
Merarini cost just £3,000 at the yearling sales and best watched.
Conclusion: Not the easiest of races to assess. The betting suggests four have a fighting chance although Millman's pair are not without a hope is fair standard. I would watch the betting for Solesman, a filly against the colts and a cheap purchase. Could drift in the betting. The betting guide will tell the story but even if fancied I would watch. Artair, Blown By Wind and Awake In Asia are most interesting. The betting is the best guide for Awake In Asia. Blown By Wind could go well for Johnston. Artair is interesting being an early horse for Michael Bell. He doesn't have many early types and it could detail a sharp horse with promise. However, I will take a watching brief.
An EBF Maiden Stakes over 1m 2f 6y on good to soft going.
Nine two-year-old runners. Seven with race experience. Not the most inspiring of a contest in some respects but I have my eye on one of the debutantes. Physicist is trained by Paul Cole and owned and bred by Mrs. Fitri Hay. This bay colt is a son of Galileo is out of a poor race mare, placed but never winning. The betting is the guide for this juvenile and the reason for making a wager. If 8/1 & SP has fair each-way claims but if weak in the betting best watched.
2:50 Windsor -
Sir Michael Stoute has been firing in a few winners and Adamant looks to hold every chance of winning this maiden after making his debut as the second string when finishing a fourth of ten behind stablemate Elucidation. To be fair, this grey colt didn't inspire confidence on that first start and backers today will be fixing their hopes on the reasoning this son of Dalakhani was in need of the race. This breeze up purchase cost 130,000E and races in the silks of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing.
I would take a watching brief.
An EBF Novices Stakes over 5f 10y on soft going. Originally nine two-year-olds but a couple of non-runners posted early with the testing conditions. David Evans had Deningy entered and I would watch out for this colt. A field of debutantes bar two form horses which catch the eye and set a fair challenge to those making their racecourse bow.
David Evan is a canny, old stick. To be honest, I think he is as crafty as a magician because he tries his utmost to get a price on a decent winning opportunity. That was the case with Awesome Allan who was well backed if not a touch lucky when winning over course and distance just over two weeks ago. This son of Acclamation looked professional and set the pace with Full Intention, looking held in the closing stages but led on post after Richard Kingsgate basically lost the race when trying to change his hands and his mount idled to be nabbed on the line.
The form of that race looks fair. Awesome Allan holds an entry for Ascot on Wednesday, a fully blown Stakes race rather than these pseudo-stakes races. Connections must be fancying this is an easier race especially carrying a 6lb penalty. This bay colt will most likely try to lead and has each-way claims but this may be a tougher race than Evans had originally envisaged.
Copper Knight, trained by Hugo Palmer, will take some beating. This son of Sir Prancealot was relatively fancied on debut when contesting a strong race at Newmarket. Sutter County prevailed and shouldered a penalty, while Tomily and Copper Knight done little wrong to finish third and fourth , respectively.
This January foal was professional and showed plenty of natural pace and, at times, looked the major threat. Anglian Bloodstock has a decent juvenile on their hands for £30,000. I was hoping for an each-way price because I would be surprised if this bay colt doesn't go very well.
The two form horses set a standard that most maidens would struggle to contend. However, there are a few interesting juveniles here from leading trainers which may have a future and worthy of consideration here.
Ralph Beckett does pretty well at Windsor and Dr Julius No is a January foal sired by Dick Turpin out of a once-race mare. He cost £30,000 at the yearling sales. The stable can win on debut and at decent odds so one to respect although I would take a watching brief unless seriously backed.
Brian Meehan has a couple of entrants: Jet Setter & Son Castello. The former is an Irish son of Fast Company and cost £57,000 when purchased at the yearling sales by Sam Sangster Bloodstock. He is a full brother to Maccus, who won on debut at this course, then disappointing at Royal Ascot in the Coventry Stakes Group 2. Meehan is a difficult trainer to assess with his debutantes although his better juveniles often win and progress with racing. He features a decent strike rate at the course as does Spencer in the saddle. The owner, Jonathan Harvey, has done well with Burano although the stable has sent out two horses in the last couple of weeks and both ran poorly.
Son Castello is an Irish son of Lilbourne Lad out of an unraced mare. This £20,000 yearling was purchased by Sam Sangster Bloodstock. Owner, J S Threadwell, has tasted success with class horse Helene Brilliant who raced at Group 1 class. Probably best watched if priced in double figures although a stable who can go well with debutantes priced 8/1 and less.
Richard Hannon needs little introduction at Windsor and Legendary Lunch is quite interesting. This chestnut son of Dragon Pulse cost £78,000 when purchased at the yearling sales by Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock. This is one of four two-year-olds entered to run at Ascot (Wednesday) which looks a very hot contest. This could well be a sign of confidence and a horse to respect from a plum draw.
Hawridge Glory is best watched.
Conclusion: Awesome Allan is no mug and a proven winner. That was a fair race although he will need to use every bit of his experience to defy a penalty and one or two hearty opponents. I can imagine a bold front-running display but I would be fearful there will be something better. Copper Knight ran very well on debut. He travelled well and held every chance and wasn't hard pressed. Hugo Palmer will be expecting a win and that will most likely happen. The only quandary is whether even money relates to value. There isn't much meat on the bone at that price and although a hard horse to beat I couldn't bet at those odds. Legendary Lunch is worthy of respect but once again the odds seem to offer very little value (tissue price 5/2). A watching brief unless Copper Knight drifts markedly in the betting.
A Fillies' Maiden Stakes over 6f on good going. Quite an interesting contest. Limonata was well backed when entered to run the other week but withdrawn when the ground turned soft. This daughter of Bushranger cost 90,000GNS in the ownership of Paul Jacobs. These silks adorn the highly talented Limato. Should go well.
A few others worthy of note.
William Haggas' Gravity Flow is held in some regard. She cost 165,000EUR as a yearling.
Lady Cecil has few two-year-olds in her string but it is intriguing to note this American daughter of Blame has been given a Stakes entry. These seemingly insignificant entries are often overlooked but a sign of confidence. Few of this trainer's juveniles win priced over 10/1. A wide draw isn't the best starting point for Granita.
Andrew Balding has been in pretty dire form with his two-year-old debutantes this season. It's difficult to appreciate why, as many have run exceptionally well on their second start. Sunflower is a daughter of Dutch Art and holds a Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1) entry [as does Gravity Flow]. The stable's juveniles can win on debut when priced 10/1 & less, especially so when 7/1. The poor performance of the debutantes this season would suggest taking a watch brief. Sooner or later one of these will go well but I'll watch today.
Jim Boyle doesn't have the greatest of strike rates with two-year-olds but Black Bess belied her odds on debut showing promise, and the betting is important for her chances today. If priced 13/2 & less SP would have decent each-way claims. If outside this betting guide I'd take a watching brief.
Conclusion: All in all a difficult race to assess with a few horses held in some regard, so could be a stronger race than first thought. Watching brief.
2:30 Brighton - Perkunas is well regarded by Brian Meehan. This bay gelding ran well on debut and set a stiff challenge when competing at York's Convivial Maiden Stakes. That race was akin to pattern class, such was the level of prize money. Should take a lot of beating.
Sterling Lines hasn't had much go right: last of fourteen on debut and then very well backed at Kempton but taking a dreadful stumble leaving the stalls which really made life difficult. Mrs Fitri Hay's colt is better than seen and a couple of Group entries detail he will go well with a touch of luck. Whether this son of Equiano can beat the favourite time will tell but he could well hold each-way claims at 10/1.
Conclusion: Perkunas is a decent juvenile and will take the beating. If Sterling Lines touches big odds there might be some value. Rather than an each-way bet I'd be tempted to have a point on the favourite and Chapple-Hyam's charge.
2:50 Windsor - Duck A L'Orange was relatively fancied on debut at 10/1 and the form of that race has been franked. Michael Bell doesn't have too many talents this season but this chestnut colt is thought to be a fair horse on the gallops and expected to improve for that first start. This is a step down in class and could well be backed. A wide draw isn't ideal but with experience this son of Duke Of Marmalade should sit handy. Interesting.
Four On Eight defied huge odds second start and this step up in distance will help. Looks a tough nut to crack.
Robert Eddery is a canny trainer and can pop up with a talented juvenile. Hepplewhite wasn't the most expensive purchased at the yearling sales for £18,000. This son of Rail Link out of a Galileo mare could be a good buy. Interesting to note this bay colt has been given an entry for the Royal Lodge Stakes (Group 2). Pie in the sky or inspired? At odds of 25/1 it wouldn't be the biggest surprise to see a glimmer of ability and one for those who like a punt.
Sporty Yankee is worth noting in the betting and if 13/2 & less SP would have serious claims. This American bred colt has been entered at Stakes class, which give encouragement.
Conclusion: A few fancied here. Four On Eight sets a fair standard. I quite like Duck A L'Orange each-way. Sporty Yankee would be a solid each-way bet if strongly fancied in the market. Hepplewhite could go well at huge odds.
An EBF Maiden Stakes over 6f on good going. A large field of fourteen colts and fillies. I won't ramble on about all and sundry.
Sir Roger Moore is held in high regard by Charlie Hills but seems dogged by bad luck. Last start saw a wall of horses at Goodwood, which pretty much ruined this colt's chances. He would have gone close to winning that day and in many respects we could have been hopeful of a fair bet today. A wide draw in stall fourteen doesn't make life easy. Will it be enough to stop this son of Kodiac going well? It certainly isn't a positive but I would respect this horse if he can sit in a handy position without blowing a gasket trying to get to the front. That's the gamble.
Dancing Star has the prime stall and it's good to see the Balding two-year-olds running better of late. There has been something amiss with many of their debutantes. This daughter of Aqlaam with appreciate an extra furlong and Kingsclere Stables do well with fancied juveniles on their second start. Drawn one is a bonus and if leading, could take some pegging back.
Richard Hannon's Dark Forest was made favourite on debut at Newmarket. This son of Iffraaj was a 120,000GNS yearling and been off course for a good while. It isn't beyond the realms he could go well although he doesn't hold any flashy entries at this stage.
Gandvik was relatively fancied on debut but little went right. He belied huge odds of 50/1 at Sandown when stepped up to seven furlongs. He pulled hard but kept going for a long way and in many ways that was a bold show. The Channon string are in good form and this drop back in distance should help him settle.
Conclusion: Dancing Star will improve a good deal, although taking on the colts. Balding's juveniles have decent win and place claims when fancied on their second start. Should go well and fair each way bet if prices allow. 1st
An intriguing maiden. At most a four-horse race. Not really telling you much there. Sirajiah was fancied to go well on debut for William Haggas but needed to be flying to beat WhatdoIwantthatfor. I'm not sure this drop back to 5f will suit. However, with a Lowther Stakes (Group 2) and Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1) entry has to be respected.
Little Voice has been given a string of lofty entries but I can't help thinking this daughter of Scat Daddy is better on the gallops. The step up to 6f at Windsor, perhaps, didn't suit and this bay filly was put in her place by Justice Lass.
Rosie Royce and Apasiona contested the same race over 5f at Sandown. The former trained by Henry Candy was fancied in the betting but had no luck in running. She coasted home and is clearly capable of much better. I'd expect a bold show.
Apasiona is held in some regard by Alan McCabe although his two-year-olds have been pretty poor this season and with a few gambles going astray I have the feeling their string hasn't lived up to earlier hopes.
I'm pretty sure connections of Sirajiah and Little Voice will be expecting a win. Little Voice is held in high regard but has had her chances and I would take a watching brief. Sirajiah will be primed. I wonder if 5f will be a touch too fast. On statistics Rosie Royce has the best chance - decent win and place claims although lacking Group entries.
At the odds I would have a small each way bet on Rosie Royce if priced 13/2 & less SP (no bet outside this guide). At 5/1 should be a no-lose bet if placed and hopeful of more.
5:20 Newcastle - A very restricted race type. These limited races often go to a form horses and Dark Confidant is likely to go well for Richard Guest. This son of Royal Applause ran well on debut - traveled with ease - but slightly disappointed when dropped back to 6f. That shorter trip tapped his pace and probably made for a weak finish. I'd expect this bay gelding to travel with authority and touch shorter odds in running. Must have strong each way claims. Interesting to see how Micheal Dods' debutante goes.
Wayside Magic is a cheap purchase and gelded. Denton Hall have good place claims with their two-year-old debutantes and they often go well at Newcastle and like softer going. I'd probably watch this horse unless 16/1+. Dark Confidant is a decent each-way bet. Might be worth a small rev f/c with Wayside Magic to pay a lot of money.
7:10 Kempton - Nemoralia is held in high regard by Jeremy Noseda and withdrawn last time which suggests connections want to make this race count. This daughter of More Than Ready made a promising debut and sterling second start at Newmarket. She is sure to run well but the down side is the price. Not much meat on the bone. I'd hold out and hope this youngster drifts in the betting and step in if 1/1 is available.
An outsider which may be worth a small bet is Henry Spiller's Star Glimmer. This daughter of Zodiac is a cheap buy for the rookie trainer and the only sign of ability is the knowledge she has been given a stakes entry. At odds of 100/1 she may get a place.
2:00 Chepstow - Rosie Royce 5/1 [Paddy Power] small ew 3rd
5:20 Newcastle - Dark Confidant 4/1 (NAP) decent ew bet 3rd
7:10 Kempton - Nemoralia 8/11 bet if evens is available 1st (touched evens exchanges)
Small ew treble
Just a few notes. Working on a number of fronts these days and not much energy going spare. Sixteen fillies over 6f on good to firm going. Couple of talking horses here with Al Khateya and Lenience both holding entries for the Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1). On balance very unlikely these debutantes will have the class to contend at that level but nonetheless their entries hint at ability. The former trained by Richard Hannon was purchased by Peter & Ross Doyle at the yearling sales for 350,000eur. A wide draw is far from ideal. Conversely, Lenience, trained by Martyn Meade, has a prime draw in stall one. This daughter of Oasis Dream is quite interesting simply for the fact that Meade has only given pattern entries to three juveniles this season, including Kurland [pictured]. She runs in the familiar black and white silks of Ladyswood Stud. Sefton Lodge generally go well with their debutantes so if this bay filly has a touch of class I'd expect some promise today if not hitting the frame. At odds of 10/1 there could well be some meat on the bone.
Lenience - worth a small speculative bet. I'd take the 10/1 and hope she is backed to half odds etc for a decent no-lose bet. Difficult horse to assess in some respects.
Touched half odds on Betfair so satisfied with my analysis. Either needed the run or poor. Terrible start just about summed things up.
A Maiden Auction Stakes over 6f on good to soft going. Eight runners in this fairly restricted two-year-old contest weighted with regard to sales price - maximum £25,000. All colts/gelding bar one filly. Only a few pounds separate top to bottom weight. The majority lightly raced with a couple of debutantes.
Run To Rio was fancied on debut but was either outpaced or inexperienced. This son of Captain Rio was the lesser fancied of two juveniles for Dods, when showing improved form over an extra furlong at Newcastle, caught on the line by the well-backed favourite. The form of that race looks fair for this level and on breeding the going should suit.
Denton Hall field stablemate and debutante Dark Command. This gelding is a son of Kheleyf, purchased at the yearling sales by the trainer for 9,000GNS. Dods can do well with his debutantes and a good number are placed. This stable often go better on soft ground so it wouldn't be a surprise to see them go well. With Run To Rio showing such promise last start I would favour that individual.
Dessert Rule wasn't fancied on debut for Jedd O'Keeffe. This son of Kheleyf was slow away and ran on in the closing stages when Ode To Evening cruised to a nine-length victory. Highbeck Racing are loyal patrons of the stable and although their juveniles are likely to progress second start this bay colt is best watched.
Richard Fahey is a class trainer of two-year-olds and probably the best at priming juveniles to win on debut. Very few handlers come close statistically when comparing first to second start. Ingleby Valley was relatively fancied on debut at Carlisle over 5f. This chestnut son of Sahkee's Secret showed signs of inexperience in the paddock but ran well when playing second fiddle to Moondyne Joe. I don't think that was the strongest of heats, which isn't a surprise when it was similarly a maiden auction. The leaders looked to go a stride too fast and fell in a hole and the first three came from well off the pace. This home bred should like the going and appreciate the extra furlong.
Richard Guest often slips under the radar, especially with two-year-olds, but he is a talented trainer and gives a very honest review on his website. Lydia's Place has served him well this season with three tidy wins after needing the run on debut. I must admit Dark Confidant caught the eye first start when sent off a 33/1 shot in what looked to be a pretty hot contest. This good-looking gelding, a son of Royal Applause, traveled with great gusto when ridden by Joey Haynes and had most in trouble until tiring in the final furlong. The third has a level of ability and the winner won on debut for Sir Michael Stoute and will be racing at Group class before long. Guest drops this gelding back a furlong and this is a drop in grade. This shorter trip may take the edge off his natural pace but he should run to line and by all accounts run a big race.
Domineeno looks second string for Ingmanthorpe Stables.
Keith Dalgleish fields a couple of runners including the only filly Candy Hill. This bay daughter of Jeremy has been fancied on both starts but disappointed on debut. However, she ran with more credit second start when losing to Mr Chuckles, who was 25/1. In truth, that looked a pretty moderate race. She steps back up to 6f. I would prefer others.
Aussie Express cost £5,000 at the yearling sales. Equus Syndicate have done well with Glenrowen Rose, who won for the yard and far from disgraced when sixth in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2). Probably best watched unless seriously backed.
Conclusion: This looks a fair race for the grade. Unless one of the two debutantes has ability [potentially both second string] this is most likely out of four horses. Candy Hill races against the boys and while she improved last start it was rather a motley affair. Possible. I'd rather watch. Ingleby Valley ran well enough on debut although the front runners went a stride too fast and the complexion of the race changed dramatically in the closing stages. This step up in distance should be a positive and the ground will suit. On statistics he holds respectable win and place claims. Run To Rio is a straightforward juvenile and put up a bold show last start when nabbed on the line. Must run well and hold every chance and a sound bet if each way odds are available. I was taken with Dark Confidant on debut. He looks a great buy at 4,000GNS. In some respects I would be more confident if running over 7f because he showed very good pace that day. You have to trust the trainer knows best and I do with Richard Guest. The testing ground should help and this bay gelding could well improve as the stable's two-year-old often do second start. If touching each way odds should go well.
Looking for big price winner? Outsider.co.uk have been firing them home of late. You'd never believe what they have done. Read their latest winning post here.
6:10 Beverley - White Bullet has run well on both starts. Very few two-year-olds start their career at Listed Class. This daughter of Exceed And Excel wandered under pressure at Newmarket when stepping up to 6f. Kevin Ryan's charge should have won if keeping straight and by all accounts is a pattern winner running in a maiden. Unless disaster strikes - she will win.
6:20 Windsor - Justice Lass is held in some regard by connections, racing in the familiar silks of Robert Ng. As noted on Group Horse, this daughter of Canford Cliffs held a Listed entry before making her debut at this course over the minimum distance. This bay filly ran on all too late, which was due to an insufficient trip and then ran in another hot contest when facing Ballydoyle, who was a narrow loser in the Chesham at Royal Ascot. David Elsworth must feel this 6f is the ideal for now after showing good pace last time out at Newmarket. There was no disgrace in finishing fourth. Little Voice is the major opponent but if making Justice Lass an each way bet - I'd take the challenge.
Couple ew trebles -
1:55 Ayr - Run To Rio or Dark Confidant 3rd (11/2)
6:10 Beverley - White Bullet 2nd (1/8) Unbelievable
6:20 Windsor - Justice Lass 1st 13/8
6:10 Wolverhampton - Quite a restricted maiden auction stakes over 5f 216y. Couple of interesting horses. Company Asset had shaped with promise on her first two starts but ran below standard when fourth at Newcastle over 6f. There was no mention of this in post race reviews but it looked to me as if the saddle slipped, which may explain such a display. There is a chance she has just regressed. The tissue price of 2/1 [Sporting Life] looks short. Would make more appeal if a price. P J McBride is a talented trainer and someone I take particular note with his two-year-olds on their second start. Squash ran well on debut at Newmarket over 6f behind Lady Macapa, White Witch & Bahaarah. This daughter of Pastoral Pursuits will be primed for this race and definitely the selection. If touching each-way prices [unlikely] I would be interested. Presently about 5/2- 11/4 on the exchanges. Definitely value at those odds and high place claims. A wide draw isn't ideal but over 6f Luke Morris should be able to find a decent position.
7:00 Windosr - A number of debutantes and not to much form on show bar Alizoom and High Speed. The former has a touch of ability although perhaps not the fastest juvenile and from a wide draw may be a touch outpaced before running on at the line. High Speed is something of an enigma - she hasn't helped herself. This daughter of Kodiac has ability but ruins her chance pulling and far too keen. Hills is dropping this bay filly back to the minimum trip and from a low draw could steal a lead. With Emerald Bay likely to be short odds - perhaps ring rusty - High Speed looks a fair bet if available at 5/1 or so. I would try to lay your bet at shorter odds in-running and then hope she holds on to her advantage.
7:30 Windsor - A big field - with one or two who catch the eye. Destroyer is held in some regard by William Muir and a lovely, big specimen of a colt. This son of Royal Applause most likely needed his debut but showed ability second start before being outclassed in the Coventry Stakes (Group 2). This is more his level and from a low draw has each way claims. Grizzly Bear is another good-looking colt. Just looked at his odds on Betfair and 40/1 seems huge. Could well be backed down. He was slightly outpaced on debut and appreciated the step up to 6f at Newmarket. That was a fair race but he didn't do himself any favours pulling in the early stages and finished a respectable seventh. A wide draw isn't ideal and I just wonder if connections will be more interested in taking the handicap route as seen with Black Granite last year for The ABC Partnership. Henry Candy is a class trainer and he has been in exceptional form with his juveniles this season - especially on their second start. Noble Peace ran well on debt at Goodwood, when losing in a photo finish. Looks a good each-way bet if prices allow.
Best tips:
6:10 Wolverhampton - Squash (very good win/place) 1st
7:30 Windsor - Noble Peace (very good win/place) Unp
7:00 Windsor - High Speed (must touch shorter odds in running) 2nd (Didn't touch shorter odds)
An EBF Maiden Stakes over 5f 10y on good to firm going. An intriguing race with a few well-touted two-year-olds. Alkhor is a good-looking son of Exceed And Excell costing 230,000GNS at the yearling sales. He was very weak in the betting when making his debut at Goodwood, when second string to Hannon's favourite, which went on to win in good style. Al Shaqab Racing will be expecting more today and this horse will take all the beating. A recent Listed race entry indicates the regard this juvenile is held.
A few of those with race experience are worthy of consideration and could be interesting each way bets. If the favourite fluffs his lines you may get more than a place. Ron Harris doesn't train many talented two-year-olds but he does know how to win and connections clearly expected a bold show from Just Glamorous (NR) when making his debut at Chepstow. There was good money for this son of Arcano, who is a fair-looking juvenile. At 55,000eur he is no bargain buy and related to a horse the stable done well with in Glamorous Air. He showed good pace then tired in the closing stages beaten by Sahreej, who is a capable sort. Harris has this chestnut colt entered for the Windsor Castle (Listed) & Norfolk Stakes (Group 2) at Royal Ascot. They may be lofty entries but this horse doesn't lack for pace and if slightly in need of the race on debut could well blaze a trail.
Another colt who is all speed is Raj To Riches. David Evans' chestnut has been unlucky not to have tasted victory with a two narrow defeats in his first starts and performing to a standard in all his five runs to date. This drop back to the minimum trip should help but there is a concern that after so may hard races he may regress at some point. In addition, he is quite a small, lean, juvenile who will look the poor relation to some of these. An admirable horse - but one I would watch.
James Given has done well with his two-year-olds this season - in fact it must be his best string in many many years. He has a number of talented juveniles heading to Royal Ascot and must have a good line to Girls In A Bentley. This daughter of Acclamation cost £60,000 at the yearling sales and a decent-looking filly. The Cool Silk Partnership have done remarkably well with Givens this season and this horse showed exceptional pace on debut at Catterick before tiring out of contention. She actually touched short odds in running, travelling well. The finishing position makes this February foal look much worse than she is and priced at 25/1+ could well be backed. If in need of the run on debut she would have good each way claims at those odds.
Stormflower has been something of a thorn in my side this season but John Bridger's filly has a lot of pace if they endeavour to lead. It is difficult to second guess race tactics because they have the knack of doing opposite. However, from a low draw it may be the day they go to the front and try to hang on to an easy lead. I can't see her winning, but this filly is likely to huge odds on the exchanges and may touch short odds in-running.
Conclusion: An interesting race. Alkhor will take the beating but a the odds represents little value. Just Glamorous will make a bold show and must have fair each way claims. Girls In A Bentley could go well at big odds and may well be backed. She has a hell of a lot of speed and likely to travel well in this race so should trade shorter in-running.
Couple of non runners have taken away from this race.
An EBF Novice Stakes race over 5f 10y on good to firm going. Nine two-year-olds take part: four with race experience - winners - and three unbeaten on their sole start to date. This isn't a race type I would normally consider a bet but I think there is a class horse in this field with William Haggas' Besharah. This bay filly, a daughter of Kodiac, cost 85,000gns at the yearling sales. She was backed on debut at Ascot, a race where the form has been franked on a number of occasions. Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's charge weaved her way through the field that day and then outpaced a good field with ease. That was a smart performance. Haggas has been careful placing this juvenile for her second start having been entered to run in Stakes, Listed and Hilary Needler Trophy before taking this option mostly likely en-rout to Royal Ascot. The form horses set a level of ability but by all account not the stiffest class and although the likes of Richard Hannon's debutante WhatdoIwantthatfor are worthy of respect it would take an outstanding horse to lower the colours of Besharah, even with a penalty. If avilable at fair odds [11/4+] I would consider this horse hard to beat. Just notice it is even money. Shortish price but will take world of beating.
An EBF Maiden fillies Stakes over 5f 10y on good going. Ten runners: three raced, debutantes from a mix of trainers.
Dream Dreamer is a good-looking daughter of first-season sire Dream Ahead out of a Listed placed and group raced mare. This February foal looks a bargain yearling buy at £35,000. Jamie Osborne always buys a good, physical specimen and this bay is held in some regard by connections. There was talk of this juvenile going to the Marygate Listed Stakes at York so this looks an realistic detour. She ran well on debut over course and distance in a fair race and then a little keen when setting the pace for a long way in a strong Ascot maiden. If available at each-way price is a decent bet.
John Bridger doesn't train many two-year-olds but a capable handler when given the ammunition. Stormflower has ability but too keen to do herself justice on both starts to date. Temperamental horses can be hard work and betting on them is something you should only consider only at big odds. It will be intriguing to see which tactics are employed as stall one is a perfect draw to try and lead all the way. This daughter of Arcano has the pace to give a bold show but it would greatly improve her chances if settled. That looks unlikely, which is a shame as she has enough ability to win a small race. The tissue odds on Sporting Life detail she will be a 13/2 shot. That doesn't inspire. I would rather lay this horse at 1.01 in-running and hope she gains an impressive lead and tires rapidly.
Nidnod hasn't been seen on course since making her debut at Newmarket over 5f. Hugo Palmer does well with his two-year-old string and talented. This Irish-bred daughter of Myboycharlie cost 30,000GNS at the yearling sales. She was quite fancied on debut, showing good pace before being bumped and eased in the closing stages. The most prominent thought from that day is that she is a very small filly. The form of that race has been franked in some respects. A difficult filly to assess. Hugo Palmer does pretty well with his juveniles when fancied on their second start when priced 13/2 & less. If within this betting guide this horses would have fair each way claims but if weak in the market I would take a watching brief.
The first juvenile of the season for Hughie Morrison. It is interesting to see him have an early two-year-old because they have proven to be future winners although very few win on debut. Cinders is a daughter of Lilborne Lad and cost 62,000eur at the yearling sales [70,000gns foal]. The only exception to the rule that this stable's juvenile debutantes can win is if they are priced 14/1 & less in the betting if not 10/1 & less. They have a fighting chance. In addition, it is worth noting that just about all of Morrison's early horses go on to win in their two-year-old careers. I would definitely take note of this juvenile on its second start at any odds.
One trainer who can be a powerhouse with debutantes is Roger Varian. Gwendolyn, a January foal sired by Invincible Spirit out of a twice-listed winning mare was fancied in the betting when making her debut at Ascot in a very hot race. She was withdrawn after refusing to go in the stalls. I would be surprised if this bay filly didn't have ability. If priced 13/2 & less has sound each way claims.
Richard Hannon needs little introduction at this course - it's a hunting ground for winners. Stroke Of Midnight is a daughter of Dark Angel owned by Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds who always register with top-flight horses. They are not the kind of people to have two-year-olds in training unless they can win. This yearling cost 45,000euro. A wide draw isn't ideal but a stable to respect.
Robert Eddery is a canny trainer and is worth noting with his two-year-olds. He has fielded one debut winner this season. Bedazzling Lady was purchased by the trainer at the Breeze-up sales for £16,000. In general, the stable doesn't have first time out winners and unless seriously backed I'd take a watching brief.
Bourne Symphony, Clever Divya & Q Ten Girl are best watched.
Conclusion: A fascinating race. Dream Dreamer sets a decent standard and if prices allow is a sound each-way bet. Gwendolyn wasn't on her best behaviour at Ascot when withdrawn. However, we have an opportunity that day to glean she was one of the major fancies. I can't imagine Varian sending her there without knowing she has ability. If priced 13/2 & less I'd be quite fearful of this juvenile. Difficult to assess Bedazzling Lady but respected. Cinders is worth noting for the future. Nidnod may have each way claims if 13/2 & less. A small horse who is difficult to assess. I'd lay Stormflower in-running at short odds. If an huge outsider I may have backed her to win but at short odds this horse looks a good lay bet to me [1.2 & less]. Dream Dreamer & Gwendolyn look the best bets.
A Maiden Fillies Stakes over 5f 10y on good going. A mix of top trainers with three two-year-olds with race experience. Alaskan Phantom is trained by Daniel Kubler in the ownership of J-P Lim & Partners. This daughter of Kodiac was purchased for 30,000 at the yearling sales and she is a well-built juvenile who is likely to progress with racing. This bay filly had a prime draw on debut over course and distance but it didn't add to her chances after a tardy start losing a number of lengths. In fairness, she ran exceptional well, cutting through the field, and held by a fair juvenile in the shape of Great Page [trained by Richard Hannon]. That initial experience will count for a lot and if starting well could take advantage of this course which suits those with pace. The form of that race has been franked and although only an maiden auction - in practice this is a step up in grade - Kubler's charge is likely to improve and has each way claims.
An EBF Maiden Stakes over 5f 10y on good going. Ten two year olds take part: one gelding, fiver colts & four fillies. Two juveniles have race experience. A selection of top trainers.
Last year this race was won by talented colt Justice Good, trained by David Elsworth. He won this race on his second start achieving three victories with a best performance when fourth behind The Wow Signal - beaten less than three lengths - in the Coventry Stakes (Group 2) at Royal Ascot.
Good to see Paul Cole's allegiance with Mrs Fitri Hay going strong. Archimedes is a bay colt sired by Invincible Spirit out of a talented multiple-winning mare [Waveband] who won at Listed class. This bay cost 240,000 at the yearling sales when purchased by Hugo Merry Bloodstock. Whatcombe Estate have fair win and place claims with debutantes 8/1 & less although few prove victorious outside that betting guide. Fitri Hay's two year olds always demand respect.
Mark Johnston has a huge string of two year olds this season and already has potentially smart juveniles with the likes of Buratino, Rah Rah & Delizia. Bathos is sired by Poet's Voice out of a twice-winning mare [Santolina] who won at Listed class and far from disgraced at Group 1. Bathos was purchased as a foal for 62,000gns, racing in the familiar silks of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum. The Johnston debutantes are a law unto themselves and although respected I'd take a watching brief. A wide draw makes life a little more difficult.
Charles Hills fields his first juveniles of the season at a course he has sent a number of decent horses. Shanghai Glory is a chestnut son of Exceed And Excel out of a winning mare who enjoyed a trip. This colt cost 115,000 at the yearling sales. The stable have fair win and place claims if priced 13/2 & less.
Their other runner is the bay filly High Speed. She is a daughter of Kodiac out of a winning mare. This juvenile cost 65,000gns from BBA Ireland and half-sister to Mary Fildes. Similar comments apply to their other horse.
David Evans has two horses: the once-race filly Silver Springs & the debutante colt Silver Wings.
*Silver Springs has course and distance experience and quite well backed when racing just over a week ago. This grey filly wandered and her jockey eased down in the closing stages when all chance had gone. It wouldn't be the biggest surprise to hear that much better was expected. The form of that first race may be fair but much more is needed here.
Silver Wings hails from the same stable and interesting because this grey colt, a son of Zebedee out of a French-raced mare, held an entry for the Brocklesby Stakes at Doncaster. Raj To Riches held a similar engagement and suffered a narrow loss at Windsor on his racecourse bow. This 17,000 yearling purchase has a good draw and worth noting in the betting. This March foal could well be subject of a gamble. Interesting.
The other form horse is trained by Brendan Powell and ridden by Fergus Sweeney. Sparky Jack was sent off 40/1 when racing on debut in a competitive maiden at Newbury. The first three or four horses have fair ability. This son of Holy Roman Emperor was purchased at the yearling sales by the trainer for 5,500gns. This bay colt was never competitive and although experience is advantageous a watching brief is advised.
Dream Dreamer is trained by Jamie Osborne. This bay filly is the oldest in the field [14th Jan] by first-season sire by Dream Ahead out of a Listed-placed mare costing £35,000 at the yearling sales. On balance, the stable have few debut winner. It is interesting to see Frankie Dettori taking the ride. Best watched.
Mark Usher isn't renowned for debut winners although his horses can run well at a price. Indigo is an early foal [9th Feb]. This grey filly is a daughter of Medicean out of an unraced mare. This horse didn't go through the sales ring. An extreme draw isn't the best start. Best watched.
Deer Song is trained by John Bridger and the only gelding in the field. The stable usually have limited two year olds although their debutante Stormflower ran well on her racecourse bow. Best watched.
Conclusion: An interesting race. The form horses need to improve although Silver Springs may be capable of better and may be backed. I'm quite interested in David Evan's debutante Silver Wings who held an entry for the Brocklesby Stakes. The stable can ready a two year old and likely to be fit. Watch the betting. If backed could go well. A low draw is a positive. The other debutantes are best judge by the market. Archimedes is well bred from a noted owner. The stable can win first time out and this bay colt has fair win and place claims if priced 8/1 & less. Charles Hills' juveniles often go well here and Shanghai Glory and High Speed have fair win and place claims if priced 13/2 & less. The others are best watched.
*NR [Silver Springs]
An EBF Maiden Stakes over 5f 10y on good going. Eight debutante two year olds take part: six colts and two fillies. A varied mix of horse trainers. Last year, this race was won by odds-on shot Magic Roundabout, trained by Richard Hannon, who proved to be a very disappointing horse thereafter.
Windsor is a popular hunting ground for Richard Hannon. Fit is one of two fillies in the line up - a daughter of Kodiac. The mare didn't race until three but won on her second start, trained by Hannon Snr. This bay filly is an early foal [20th January] and racing in the familiar silks of Mrs Julie Wood. She was purchased as a foal for 12,000eur. The stable have a 23% win rate with their juveniles here over the last five years [9 from 40]. Subsequently, their two year olds at this course are often priced to chance and, perhaps, not great value. It often takes a fair filly to beat the colts but a horse to give worthy consideration.
Mark Johnston has continued his flying start to the two year old campaign with Delizia who won on Saturday. Beaverbrook is a home bred colt from Darley. The mare won a couple of races over a trip. Kingsley House Stables are in the limelight and with an increased string of two year olds will be fancied in the betting. On breeding, this bay colt may appreciate 6f. I'd take a watching brief.
Rod Millman fields two colts: Concur is an Irish bred son of Approve out of an unraced mare. This April foal cost £24,000 at the yearling sales purchased by Geoffrey Howson and Rod Millman.
Handytalk is also Irish bred, a son of Lilbourne Lad out of an unraced mare. This bay colt cost £32,000 at the yearling sales. In general, Rod Millman has a poor strike rate with his debutantes with around 3 winners in 130 or so two year olds since 2007. However, two of those victories came in recent years with Master Carpenter (2013) & Bonnie Grey (2014). The former was a class horse, which can often defy the stats. The tissue price [Sporting Life] suggests they will be relatively fancied in the betting. I would have to take a watching brief because they usually improve for race experience.
Interesting to see Marcus Tregoning with an early juvenile. Port Gaverne is an American bred in the ownership of the trainer. This bay colt is a son of Lord Shanakil out of a poor mare who needed a trip. He cost 15,000eur at the yearling sales. This stable can win on debut when priced 14/1 & less. They feature fair place claims when priced at 13/2 & less although the win rate is poor. On balance, I'd take a watching brief.
Raj To Riches could well be a dark horse. David Evans is a canny old stick and this horse was one of two who were engaged to run in the Brocklesby Stakes [Silver Wings]. This chestnut colt, a son Iffraaj, cost 60,000euro as a foal. The trainer and jockey have decent statistics at this course. If priced 13/2 & less has fair win and place claims.
Zeeoneandonly looks to be second string for the trainer.
Arlecchino's Rock cost £21,000 when purchased at the yearling sales by Oliver St Lawrence Bloodstock. This chestnut colt is bred to need further and Mark Usher's juveniles are likely to need the run.
Conclusion: Interesting to see how the ground goes with regard to what could be a good or bad draw. An intriguing race. Richard Hannon does well here and even though Fit is a filly taking on colts she should be respected. It can be difficult to pick the wheat from the chaff but one for the shortlist. Beaverbrook hails from a stable who can do little wrong. I find Johnston's two year olds difficult to assess - the classic easy winner or poor loser. The breeding of this colt suggests he will be better over 6f+. I would take a watching brief. Concur, Handytalk and Port Gaverne come from stables who are better second start. It doesn't mean they cannot win but I wouldn't back them. Raj To Riches catches the eye and his entry for the Brocklesby Stakes may be a pointer to ability. This colt cost 60,000euros at the sales and entered to race at Newbury [Friday]. The trainer and jockey have fair win and place claims at this course and feature a decent strike rate when priced 13/2 & less. Evans always has a fair early horse but whether this is it only time will tell. I would have to consider Fit & Raj To Riches as most likely with the latter most intriguing, especially if backed.
An EBF Maiden Stakes over 1m 67y on soft ground. Eleven two-year-olds take part: colts, geldings & solitary filly. Last week I mentioned one of Andrew Balding's juveniles on its second start - which disappointed. Horses win: horses lose. In general, my analysis is correct so we will see if Kingsclere Park House Stable can hit the target this time round. Rocky Rider is a son of top-class stallion Galileo out of a limited-winning mare. This bay colt was purchase by David Redvers Bloodstock for 400,000gns from Tattersall October Sales 2013 (Book 1). The mare has produced a number of exceptionally expensive offspring - no doubt being influenced by Blue Duster, who is on this youngster's page. In the familiar maroon silks of Qatar Racing Ltd, Rocky Rider was quite well backed on debut at Haydock over one mile when fourth behind Lord Ben Stack. Although beaten a good few lengths this juvenile showed promise and is sure to come on first that first start. If priced in single figures hold respectable win and place claims.
An EBF Maiden Fillies Stakes over 5f 10y on good ground. Sixteen juveniles: ten raced, six debutantes and a mix of top-class trainers. By all accounts this looks a tricky event, especially with a number of the leading fancies being high drawn. It will be intriguing to see whether the majority favour the stands' rail, venture to the far rail or even split. All these variables are dependent on ground and should be considered with regard to price.
War Alert was sent off even money favourite when contesting a maiden here over 6f on debut. That was a fair contest. This daughter of War Front cost 270,000gns at the Tattersall's Guineas Breeze-Up Sales 2014. Trained by David Brown, for the Quatar Bloodstock Partnership, ridden by retained jockey, Jamie Spencer. This February foal is clearly held in some regard and holds an entry for the Lowther Stakes (Group 2). She is likely to be fancied to go well here although I would have some reservation about the drop back to this minimum trip. It could well be the case this bay filly will be slightly outpaced. I would rather take a watching brief as the trip looks sharp.
Artfilly wasn't disgraced on debut at Newmarket but improved a good deal when finishing second at Lingfield over 5f. Ed Walker does well with his two-year-olds and this daughter of Art Connoisseur is a compact, professional horse which should travel well and battle to the line. The form of that race has been franked, although the winner, trained by James Tate, won in good style. Another juvenile with a high draw (14). Should run a decent race and has claims unless there is a talent in the line-up.
Emirates Challenge was relatively fancied on debut but always on the back foot after an awkward start, then eased down in the last furlong when her chance had gone. Saeed Bin Suroor is a class trainer and this February foal is well bred out of a talented multiple-winning mare [Sand Vixen], placed in the Princess Margaret Stakes (Group 3) & victorious in the Flying Childers Stakes (Group 2). Juveniles are always deserving a second bite at the cherry and if fancied in the betting a much brighter performance should be seen on this second start.
There are a couple of juveniles which may have disappointed to some extent on debut but worthy of interest.
Carrot Top is a home bred filly in the ownership of Lady Whent who is no stranger to talented juveniles [Goldcrest won well for Henry Candy] and she is a loyal patron of Ralph Beckett. This daughter of Assertive made her debut over 6f at Goodwood, when starting 11/4 second favourite. This chestnut filly is a good-looking juvenile, deep chested with size and scope. It was clear she had sweated-up quite markedly and looked hot before the start and ran too keen over the first two furlongs, which done her no favours. Even with this negative, she held every chance until the final furlong and wasn't pressed by Dane O'Neill when their chance had gone. It is coming up to two months since that first start, which suggests there has been a problem along the way. This drop back to 5f shouldn't be a problem and I can see this filly improving on that first start and could be held in some regard by connections. A lower draw could be a good starting point if favouring the stands' rail.
Disprove hails from another trainer who knows his two-year-olds. Hugo Palmer has some good juveniles in his string and Disprove looks a bargain breeze-up purchase at £20,000. This daughter of Approve is out of a twice-place mare. This bay filly ran well over 6f in a competitive Newmarket maiden. She was too keen in the early stages but held every chance and only tired in the final furlong and still beaten under five lengths. It is always difficult to assess how a horse will fair when it drops down in distance because the pace of a five and six furlong race is markedly different. With showing abundant pace on debut you would have to consider the trainer knows best and Noel Garbutt takes off a handy 5lb. Another filly with a high draw.
Robin Hill has run well on both starts to date but may find this a stiff task although may sneak a place if this race falls apart.
*Crystal Wish has size and scope and wasn't disgraced last time out at Catterick although others make more appeal.
The betting is the best guide for the leading stable debutantes: Renaissant, Effectual, Star Fire, Candlelight & Some Show. All have claims if priced 13/2 & less.
Conclusion: A difficult but fascinating race to assess. There looks plenty of strength and depth for a run-off-the-mill maiden and those with experience could well set a fair level for the debutantes to chase. With the majority of the fancied runners featuring a high draw it will be interesting to see where the horses' race. The ground will most likely be a deciding factor and if the going turns soft a high draw would be an advantage. However, on better ground a lower draw could see one or two head straight for the rail. War Alert is likely to be fancied in the betting and this drop back to the minimum trip may not pose a problem. However, I would have slight concerns she could struggle for pace and this factor could be compounded from a high draw, especially if they race down the stands' side. With so many variables you really need a price to consider betting. Artfilly is a professional horse who will go well and probably the most proven in this field over the distance. Emirates Challenge is a well bred filly who fluffed her lines on debut. If fancied in teh betting she could well put that disappointment behind her and holds each way claims. Carrot Top is likely to improve a good deal for that first run and could be held in some regard by connections. May be worth a speculative punt if big odds are available early on the exchanges. Disprove is another who could go well if fancied in the betting. With a few debutantes from big stables this could be a difficult race to find the winner. I would take a watching brief unless you can have a speculative bet on Carrot Top. I would be looking for value at the very least.

A Maiden Auction Fillies' Stakes over 5f 10y on good ground. Thirteen two-year-olds take part, three with race experience. The nature of this race type details form horses are often favoured, while those with a race under their belt are likely to fly, their chances further enhanced by a low draw on this turning course.
David Evans has made a sparkling start with his juveniles this season. Zermintrudee may have been second string on debut but showed promise. Patience Alexander was sent off odds on favourite for that race slamming the field. Zermintrudee, a daughter of first season sire Zebedee and cheap yearling purchase at 4,000euros, was outpaced on debut but looks a progressive juvenile. It could be the case this bay filly was inexperienced, didn't enjoy the kick-back, or may even appreciate a stiffer trip. The mare raced over sprint distances at two, so it was mostly likely inexperience, indicated by her 33/1 starting odds. She ran on well to finish runner-up, only finding her stride late on. The stable have fair win and place claims with their juveniles when fancied on their second start. I would imagine this April foal will be brighter from the stalls although their is always a concern she may be outpaced and playing catch up.
Sparbrook ran in the same race, finishing third, beaten three-quarters of a length. This daughter of Kodiac cost 11,000euros. George Baker's youngster showed more pace than the above mentioned but was only battling for minor honours against the easy winner. The stable usually have their two-year-olds primed for a big race second start, which adds interest, although in some respects she needs to improve. The betting is key with this filly and if fancied would give hope. For horse trainer quotes visit Horse Trainer Directory - 100% Free Trainer Quotes.
That debut was a full maiden, while by race type this is a weaker contest. However, it is difficult to assess the merit of that debut form, as they looked a bit of a motley crew. With the winner trouncing the opposition it could limited those in behind or perhaps the winner is a star. That is the problem with early-season form and until you have a benchmark you are always taking a risk. Zermintrudee & Sparbrook hold claims as long as they are fancied in the market.
David Evans is represented by another raced juvenile - Low Cut Affair. She finished fourth behind the impressive Tiggy Wiggy. The second, Charlie's Star, ran a storming race next start, while the sixth showed little. The betting is the best guide to the Evans respective chances.
Of the debutantes, the betting will be the best starting point. While a handful of trainers can go well with horses on their racecourse bow others are likely to need the run.
Polar Vortex is owned by Alan Craddock, who is no stranger to a talented horse (Lethal Force) purchased by trainer Clive Cox for £26,000. She is a full sister to Electric Qatar. This chestnut filly isn't two until later this month. If priced 13/2 & less this horse has fair win and place claims. A relatively wide draw is a negative.
Michael Bell has his first two-year-old runner. Arousal is a cheap £8,000 daughter of Stimulation out of a winning Irish mare. Bell can send out debut winners although those which prove victorious are usually talents. In general, I would rather take a watching brief.
Another trainer who is worth noting on debut is Eve Johnson Houghton. Karluk is a daughter of Kodiac cost 13,500euros. In truth the stable do not feature the best strike rate on debut unless exceptionally well backed.
The rest of the debutantes are likely to need the run.
No One Knows is a home bred owned by Gary and Linnet Woodward. John Hills knows this family John Hills well. The mare won at two - a capable type in the same ownership. A wide draw isn't ideal and the stable's youngsters often improve with racing.
June's Moon hails from John Portman's stable. His two-year-olds do spring the odd surprise on debut but best watched.
Frozen Princess has a wide draw which is often be problematic and the stable are better second start.
Similarly the better drawn Mylaporyours & Magical Daze are best watched unless strongly backed.
Itsindebag & Kidmeforever are both cheap buys, trained by Stan Moore. This stable can have the odd debut winner at speculative odds and the latter's owners had Kidmenot, who wasn't a bad horse last year. Best watched.
Conclusion: Race experience often gives a winning edge in these restricted auction races. In addition, a low draw is an advantage, especially with those who have a run under their belt. A high draw is a negative and if tardy from the stalls it will take a fair sort to win. Zermintrudee & Sparbrook look to hold an advantage. The former will need to be sharper and it isn't beyond the realms she is slightly tapped for toe. David Evans doesn't let the grass grow under his horse's hooves and she could well be primed for the day and looks the type to finish her race which is always a strength. Sparbrook shouldn't be ignored and if strongly fancied in the betting could well make a fight of this. If weak in the betting I would consider Zermintrudee holds the aces. Of the debutantes, Polar Vortex has claims if priced 13/2 & less. A wide draw is a negative although Cox is a talented trainer. The others are best watched unless strongly backed.
A Maiden Fillies' Stakes over 6f on good to firm ground. Olly Stevens has started his training career in style and a dab hand with his two-year-olds who have helped promote Robins Farm Stables. Hoku is a daughter of Holy Roman Emperor and a fair horse at best. A bargain buy costing just £14,000 at the yearling sales, connections expected a winning debut. If not hindered by a slow start from a wide draw, there is little doubt this early [February] foal would have started her career on a high. Finishing runner-up at Listed class on her second start at York illustrates a talented juvenile. Unfortunately, lady luck has not been on her side, struggling with a terribly slow start at Lingfield, then hampered at Nottingham a few days back when sure to have gone close. In truth, good fortune hasn't favoured this bay filly on her return to Windsor. A high draw makes life difficult and it could prove a stumbling block. Without question, Sheikh Suhaim Al Thani's youngster has the class to win a race of this nature. I can see her touching much bigger odds in running, especially with the fear she will be slow from the stalls, which has been a characteristic of late. A high draw has been a real problem for many two-year-olds racing at Windsor this season and most have lost a good few lengths which pus them adrift of those against the rail. I would either take a watching brief or place a few quid in running at bigger odds and cross my fingers that class prevails.
A Maiden Fillies' Stakes over 5f 10y on good to firm ground. Nine two-year-olds take part, all race bar one debutante. Oriel has been a talking horse for Richard Hannon's stable and by all accounts a frustrating juvenile for those who have backed her. A beaten favourite on three occasions and relatively short odds when contending the Queen Mary Stakes (Group 2) at Royal Ascot have proven costly. This bay filly, a daughter of Fastnet Rock, was purchase as a yearling for 60,000gns and in the ownership of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing - Petrushka. This February foal was expected to win on debut at Ascot but bumped into a true talent in Rizeena. She had no luck in running behind Alutiq, then put in her place in the Queen Mary Stakes, thereafter a creditable third at Newmarket when stepping up to 6f for the first time. Connections will be expecting a win today although with a run of bad luck there will be plenty of layers who consider the misery will be prolonged. A wide draw isn't ideal but experience should see her well. Not my kind of betting at short odds but a talented juvenile who deserves a win.
