2:10 Leicester
A condition stakes race over 7f(9y) on good to soft ground. A tricky little heat. Marked Card is favourite on the exchanges (2.8) but whether this son of Kheleyf has a favourite's chance is a matter of debate. On the face of it, his win at Brighton looked quite comfortable and he certainly holds Blue Deer on that performance. However, you have to question the merit of that form with Red Riverman (8/15 fav) disappointing and it may have turned into a weak race. Time may tell that it was a fair run but it is slightly concerning why Marked Card was beaten so easily at Chester. It could be the case that Fretwell's juvenile wasn't suited by such an idiosyncratic course. Clearly, today will answer those questions. But I would be careful backing this two-year-old at short odds. Yair Hill has a fighting chance although this colt is no world beater. The Goodwood race was pretty strong and it is encouraging to see the 2nd - Weapon Of Choice - winning on his second start. Yair Hill was outclassed that day and didn't get the mile. This 7f will see Dunlop's runner in a better light but once again a horse that may be vulnerable, although I would favour this youngster to Marked Card. By all accounts this looks a difficult race and even though it would take a fair performance from a juvenile to win on debut (and a filly against the colts) it wouldn't be the biggest surprise to see Al Mayasah go well. David Simcock has been in tremendous form this year and this bay by Shamardal could well be one of the trainer's best fillies. Owner Ahmad Al Shaikh has does well with his two-year-olds and this may be the dark horse of the race but in fairness it is more of a watching brief than a betting race.

3:10 Leicester
The most interesting race of the day. This looks a four-horse race at most. Marden has the most proven form and has been well backed on the exchanges. An attractive colt by Danehill Dancer and trained by the in-form Brian Meehan, there is much to like about this two-year-old. The Newmarket maiden he competed on debut has been franked a number of times and this bay colt wasn't pressed that day, given a considerate introduction, and like most of Meehan's juveniles is likely to improve. A multi group-entered juvenile, Marden sets the standard. Michael Jarvis has been in amazing form with his debutantes this season but Indian Emperor knocked those statistics with his 4th at Haydock. An attractive colt by Araafa, he looked to hold every change but tired rapidly in the final furlong. Whether that was to do with lack of fitness or simply failing to get the distance in such conditions is an a matter of opinion. But there is little doubt this drop back to 7f could see a much better run today. Jarvis has a very good win rate with his fancied juveniles on their second start and one of the main dangers to the favourite. Danadana ran a fair race on debut and Luca Cumai's two-year-olds generally improve a good deal for the experience. This colt by Dubawi had every chance until tiring in the final furlong and should strip fitter today and has each-way claims. Raahin has been entered for a number of Group races throughout the season and has to be respected from Sir Michael Stoute. It is always difficult to assess the chances of the stable's two-year-olds on debut as they are rarely pressed but can win on natural ability alone. The betting is the best indicator to this ones chances as the yard have very few horses win over 13/2 when making their race course bow.

Andrew Balding is a talented trainer and his juveniles are always worth noting on their second start. King Ferdinand ran an encouraging race on debut and this extra furlong will bring about further improvement. There has been money for this Thurloe Thoroughbred owned son of Tobougg, which suggests a big run today.

A watching race but keep an eye on Tazahum, a handsome, proud-running colt by Redoubte's Choice. This will be a stiff test but Sir Michael Stoute's youngster gave the impression he has a touch of class.

Brian Meehan has been in fine from with his two-year-olds and Irons On Fire, an American-bred gelding by Tale Of The Cat should improve for the debut run at Wolverhampton and especially this step up in distance. The form of that first run is holding up well and this $100,000 buy has strong place claims.

Interesting to see how Claret'N'Blue fares over this extended mile after being campaigned at a higher level. It is difficult to assess the ability of this colt but this drop in class will make life much easier.

Monday's Thoughts

A watching race but notable how short Tom Dascombe's Present Danger is in the betting for this debut over 6f(5y). A 200,000gns yearling and recent entrant for a Stakes race suggest this youngster has ability. The only runner and ride for Kingscote at the track are all additional positives.


2:30 Kempton
Zing Wing makes a quick return after running at the weekend. A capable two-year-old with enough ability to win a maiden. This filly by Hawk Wing has a tendency to pull and should have the pace to sit in a handy position. The quick appearance is a slight concern. Magical Flower could well be a realistic alternative after a creditable run at Kempton last time, which looks a decent event. This filly by Oasis Dream was backed to run well that day and led to the 7f marker but tired in the last furlong. This step back in distance should be more suitable and has fair place claims. 15/2 3rd

Comment: ' Quite a competitive heat and Magical Flower had every chance in the final furlong but couldn't make an impact on the durable Zing Wing.'

An intriguing event with Flodden and Terdaad re-opposing after running in the Convivial Maiden at York. The latter trained by Saeed Bin Suroor went off favourite that day but disappointed and is on something of a recovery mission. In recent weeks this son of Shamardal has been entered to run in a number of Stakes races, suggesting connections think winning a maiden is a formality. Once again. this Godolphin runner has been very well backed and clearly expectations are high for a big run.

Flodden has run a number of creditable races and holds Terdaad on their running at York. It will be fascinating to see how this colt by Henny Hughes fares today. The betting suggests that Terdaad will make amends for the York loss, although that point still has to be proven. Flodden has ability but looks a galloper rather than a speed merchant and it is possible on this turning track he may be out paced if it is run at a fair pace. The fact that he has experience on side negates that point however it is worth keeping in mind. Cole's two-year-old is a sturdy sort and has finished behind a number of talented juveniles. It is difficult to fully assess his form and Flodden looks to be an average horse with little acceleration and may benefit being ridden prominently - if he has the pace to hold such a position. Cole's youngster deserves to win a race and looks a safe each-way bet if price allows. Time may tell that at 4/1 or so he is a cracking win bet - but I would be careful on that front as it would seem Terdaad is expected to win.

Plenty of money for Godolphin's Khawlah - who was fancied on debut but lost her chance after a slow start. The debutante Highest has been well supported for the in-form Gosden yard. Choral has improved with the step up to a mile and that was a fair race at Kempton where Hannon's youngster finished 2nd and has place claims at a price. 8/1 4th

A big field for this auction race and a few talented juveniles. Fulgar is fancied to run a big race. Rain Mac was slow away on debut and looked very inexperienced when a 7/2 shot. The betting suggests this bay colt has ability but he will need to be much wiser today. Halfsin is a lovely-looking colt and he ran on well under a considerate ride from Moore in what looked a fair maiden on debut. Far from an easy race to win but another with place claims and likely to improve a good deal for that first start. 6/1 2nd

Quite competitive racing today at the grade 1 racecourses.

1:30 Newbury

Not the easiest of races to assess but the top three in the betting are all strongly fancied. Buckland should improve for the extra furlong and could be a decent juvenile. At the prices Yair Hill is a tentative each way bet at 4/1. An attractive colt, he ran with promise in a very good Newmarket maiden won by Native Khan. Dunlop's two-year-old should improve for that debut and has place claims. 2nd

6:35 Newmarket

One of the most interesting races of the day but a pretty competitive maiden. The winner of this maiden will be a talented juvenile and a couple of form horses are worth noting. David Simcock thinks a lot of Maher and he is much better than his last running at Epsom. This extra furlong should suit and although a difficult race to win at odds of 12/1 is a fair each way bet. Another to consider is the only filly in the field, Bonita Star. It is never easy taking on the colts but Channon has entered this youngster in a Listed race and clearly thinks she has some ability. That was a fair performance on debut at Goodwood in a tough race and this extra furlong and experience will bring about further improvement. 6th

This looks a poor race on paper with Infectious a juvenile of limited ability and taking an age to get going at Ripon last time is likely to drift in the betting. This must be an ideal opportunity for Barefoot Lady to go close and Hanagan to keep up the momentum for the jockeys' titles. Mrs H Steel rarely owns a bad horse and Fahey has a good strike rate at Beverley. 1st

4:55 Goodwood

This doesn't look a very strong race and Winter's Night and Hard Bargain are the most interesting candidates here. Cox does well at Goodwood and Winter's Night should improve a good deal for the debut. Hard Bargain ran well on debut but disappointed next start when that run seemed too bad to be true. If back to his best, this bay colt should have strong each way claims. 2nd

A maiden for colts and one filly over 1m.

Simon Dow has had his two-year-olds in good form and Tagansky improved a good deal from his debut to bustle up Introvert in a fair auction maiden. This colt by Barathea had to run wide for much of the race and made a strong challenge in the home straight to be held by the winner who is a fair two-year-old. It is a matter of opinion whether this extra furlong will suit or not but you have to consider the trainer knows best. This youngster should have plenty enough speed to sit in a handy position and has probably achieved the best form on show and must have place claims at least.

Of the others with form, Abjer comes out relatively quickly after a nice introduction at Doncaster, when not too far away, in a messy race. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the form of that contest hold up as Fabiello has since won and the first and second look progressive juveniles. Not the easiest of horses to assess at present but one for the short list.

Robert Mills has done well with his juveniles racing on the all-weather this season and Buxfizz could well be another two-year-old to note on his second start. A breeze-up purchase for 70,000gns, this colt by Elusive Quality was given an easy introduction at Sandown and still managed to show some ability before losing his place in the straight. This extra furlong is likely to suit. An entrant for the Royal Lodge Stakes (Group 2), a more professional display should be seen today and if backed it would be an additional sign of encouragement.

Of the debutantes, Questioning and Tiger Webb are likely to figure at the top end of the betting.

Questioning cost 160,000gns. An American-bred and first foal. Gosden always deserves respect and a Royal lodge Stakes (Group 2) entry is a sign that this two-year-old may have ability. It is never easy for a juvenile to win on debut, especially on a turning track, although over this distance youngsters do have time to negate such inexperience over sprints. Gosden has a fair win and place rate with his fancied two-year-olds when making their race course bow.

Henry Cecil has been pretty quiet with his two-year-olds, this being his 5th runner of the season. A 65,000gns colt by Hurricane Run and grandson of One So Wonderful, catches the eye. Cecil's juveniles often run well on debut but generally fail to get their head in front and feature about a 13% win rate with debutantes in recent years.

Tip: 7:20 Lingfield - Buzzfizz 1PTEW (6/1) 6th
Comment: 'Probably turned out to be a decent race but a disappointing effort from Buxfizz who was well backed but sadly didn't achieve what was expected. A statistical bet that normal go well.'

A maiden over 6f3y for colts and fillies on good ground.

Darej will go off a hot favourite. This American-bred chestnut colt cost $170,000 as a yearling and clearly held in high regard by Haggis and connections with entries for the Champagne Stakes (Group 2), Middle Park Stakes (Group 1) and Dewhurst Stakes (Group 1). On balance, there is much to instill confidence about this two-year-old. However, Haggis doesn't feature the best win and place statistics with his debutantes, which indicates many improve for their racecourse bow. This doesn't look a particularly strong maiden which makes a successful first victory more likely although it would pay to tread careful.

The main opponent looks to be the Mark Tompkin-trained Toparichi. A home-bred colt by Bahamian Bounty, this youngster went off 66/1 on debut when a long way behind the talented Formosina, running on showing a glimmer of ability. Tompkins' two-year-olds often improve for the run and if fancied in the betting have very good place claims. The potential for this juvenile to win comes more from the likelihood that the favourite will need the experience. Price permitting, Toparichi is a fair each way bet.

Of the rest, Burnem Green would have a significant chance if backed and relatively fancied in the betting.

Comment: 'A poor race and the favourite was clearly in need of the run but Toparichi ran no race at all. Considering Tompkins' second string was in front of our selection I cannot believe this was his running. A statistical bet that are generally very strong. A disappointing 7th is particularly frustrating.'

A slight change to the blog posting today with general thoughts about a few two-year-olds.

1:45 Thirsk

Ezzles is taken to run much better after being too inexperienced on debut. Paul Cole Racing said: 'He was extremely green at Sandown, but was up against a Hannon odds-on shot, who won very nicely. We think he will really come on in time and we like him a lot.' Cole has good statistics at Thirsk and this attractive colt should go well today.

2:10 Newmarket

Handicaps are never the easiest of races to appreciate but Bay Of Fires has been in good form of late and one of the more likelier types for this at a price.

2:20 Thirsk

Barry Hills has his juveniles in fine form and Face The Problem is a talented colt with speed to burn. Under top weight of 9-9 it will be interesting to see if this son of Johannesburg can win this and go on to compete in the Gimcrack (Group 2).

3:55 Newmarket

Theyskens' Theory has been very well backed on the exchanges and with the Meehan two-year-olds coming to form a much improved performance should be seen over this 7f. This American-bred filly,an entrant for the Fillies' mile (Group 1), was slow away on debut and most likely needed the run. With plenty of scope, it would seem that connections are expecting a classier performance this afternoon.

7:55 Lingfield

Dubai Affair ran well over 6f at Salisbury last time from a wide draw and showed good speed before tiring in the final furlong. That was a decent race and over 5f this well-bred filly - and daughter of Palace Affair - has a fighting chance against the favourite Foghorn Leghorn.

Comment: 'A statistical bet which usually go well but a hopeless performance from Cole's juvenile. Clearly the stable think something of this two-year-old and time may tell he is capable of better. Certainly more experience is needed and this speedy 5f just didn't suit.'

Comment: 'There was a lot of confidence behind this horse today and no wonder as Meehan's filly won in 'impressive' style.'

Not much form to go on here.

Royalorien ran well on debut when 2nd at Nottingham. This bay filly by Royal Applause was inexperienced that day and always struggling to go the pace but flew home at the finish and unlucky not to win. That looked a decent race and Knight should find more improvement and inexperience will be a plus. This is likely to be a more competitive race but that initial run will put Royalorien in a good position for another big run.

Brian Meehan' two-year-olds are in much better form and Brevity is fancied in the betting which is an encouraging sign. It is interesting that Dwyer was originally booked to ride Royalorien but may be obliged to take this mount. Meehan's juveniles generally come on for the run and he doesn't feature the greatest win rate on debut.

Ed Dunlop and Kieren Fallon have been a winning team this year with their two-year-olds and probably reason why Sharnberry has ben backed on the exchanges. This daughter of Shamardal cost 120,000gns as a yearling and one of the more likely debutantes. However, it is never easy to win on a race course bow.

Another debutante worth noting is the Hannon representative owned by Mrs J Wood who must be one of the luckiest owners going with a string of talented two-year-olds. This 110,000gns purchase should be respected and one for the short list.

Comment: 'Never seemed to be travelling and hanging from the start. Little doubt Knight's two-year-old disappointed as she has ability but far from ideal.'

The majority of these look poor but this is an interesting race in its own way with a couple of debutantes worth noting.

Kodiac Star is an attractive filly but limited. Osbourne has tried a variety of distances to find the key to this daughter of Kodiac but little has worked so far. She is probably best suited by this 5f, however, even at this lowly level doesn't inspire confidence.

Best Be Careful has speed to burn but founders in the final furlong. Usher's two-year-olds are in decent form and this track will suit. Her last effort at Nottingham illustrated an element of ability in what was a poor event but another to look vulnerable.

Of those with form Upark Flyer has a fighting chance and strong place claims. Patrick Morris is a capable trainer and often goes unnoticed. This filly by Piccolo has shown ability on her last two starts and should appreciate this 5f, being a compact sort. With Fahy in the saddle, claiming 5lb, and bottom weight, she has every advantage going and this looks a fine opportunity to win a race. A two-year-old of limited ability but a fair candidate for a auction race of this nature.

It is never easy to win on debut with everything happening so quickly but two juveniles making their race course bows are worth a mention.

Prince Titus, an 8,000gns brother to Miami Gator, comes from a stable which should always be respected, that of Linda Stubbs. A rare visitor to Lingfield, many of their two-year-olds need the run, which can muddy the waters a touch when trying to appreciate the likelihood of a decent performance on debut. However, in the last two years Stubbs has sent out a few winners at the first time of asking. The point of interest with Prince Titus is that he was originally entered to run in the Brocklesby Stakes, which seems a very long time ago now. Clearly there must have been a few problems along the way for this gelding by Titus Livius not to have run. In the past, Stubbs has entered a few decent prospects for the Brocklesby and it could be the case that this juvenile has ability. A difficult juvenile to assess but one worth noting especially if backed.

Alan Jarvis is a canny trainer and Smart Performance is an interesting runner in what looks to be a poor maiden. Owner Geoffrey Bishop has many horses with Jarvis and knows a good horse when he has one. It is encouraging to see that his bay colt by Acclamation has been given a Gimcrack (Group 2) entry. A cheap purchase at 3,500gns this colt could have ability. The dam, Green Eyes, was unraced but trained by Roger Charlton costing 230,000gns suggesting a decent breeding line. Jarvis features a poor win rate on debut suggesting that most of his two-year-olds come on for the run, however, Navajo Chief was a 50/1 winner on debut for this owner last year.

Both of these debutantes are difficult to assess but these entries are worth noting as they could be significant pointers.

A restricted auction race over 7f.

U A E Storm finished behind a talented horse in Deep South when second on debut at Kempton. This American-bred colt cost 50,000gns and David Simcock indicated that this two-year-old would improve for the run. The third Tick Tock Lover has run respectably since, although the form is probably nothing out of the ordinary and on a line through Diamond Penny there isn't a huge difference between Danzig's Grandchild and Sky Falcon. A slight negative is that Simcock doesn't feature the best win rate with his fancied juveniles on their second start although the place rate is fair. If improvement is forthcoming, then a decent run can be expected, however, at short odds may be one to oppose.

David Lanigan is a clever trainer and Menadati caught the eye on debut at Sandown. After a slow start, this colt by More Than Ready ran on with encouragement, to finish mid division without being pressed. A nice-looking bay with size and scope, it isn't a surprise to see money for this one on the exchanges although there is still a lot to prove beyond that initial effort. Lanigan has good place statistics with his fancied juveniles on their second start but often struggles to win. An interesting runner but a bet on potential rather than proven ability.

Nothing To Hide has run well on his last two races and is a robust sort who will take his racing. The form of his Windsor race is no more than average and the 2nd at Lingfield is slightly difficult to appreciate as Midnight Feast didn't give his true running from a wide draw. Whether this step up to 7f will suit is a matter of debate but it is sensible to consider the trainer knows best. This gelding by Barathea has enough ability to win at auction level, however, this does have the feel of a competitive race.

As noted above, Danzig's Grandchild and Sky Falcon have form lines with the potential favourite and the Warwick race may have been a stronger race than it first seemed. The 5th, Highlife Dancer, has won a moderate race since and at a price they could have a fighting chance.

Comment:'Always travelled well and held a slight advantage in the final furlong but tired to finish 5th. Mark Johnston's Sky Falcon won, which is a touch ironic as our selection beat this runner last time. Perhaps that colt improved? Disappointing.'

An EBF maiden fillies' race over 6f.

An intriguing contest with a number of form horses opposing with varying price tags.

Mama Lulu is trying to make it third time lucky after finishing second on her last two starts. A beaten favourite twice doesn't make her a punters' friend and connections must be disappointed not to have taken the $575,000, but not sold, at the sales. This daughter of Kingmambo is an attractive filly but she does seem to have her quirks. It might just be the case this Bell runner, with Turner in the saddle, will win but there will be plenty wondering whether she will be another beaten favourite. The form of both starts is difficult to assess as the race at Doncaster, if anything, has not been boosted by a couple of runners down the field and the Pontefract race, bar the winner, looked moderate at best. Perhaps a second to Zabeel Park was a good performance? At worst Mama Lulu has an element of ability with the possibility of more to come. There will be no excuses for today's running as there are proven form horses in the field. This filly hung quite markedly at Pontefract when pressed and may be one to watch today.

Pam Sly has been unlucky not to have found a winner in Whisper Louise by now after a number of consistent efforts, only to be denied by one or two capable juveniles. A rather small filly - but a determined soul - she ran well at Ripon over 5f when narrowly beaten in a large field. It is questionable whether this bay filly is better over 6f or not. She ran well at Pontefract, however, they went no pace early - and pulled fiercely - and then out classed by the talented Sonning Rose. Whisper Louise has enough ability to win a race although in theory this could be a step up in class, being a maiden rather than auction event. It is worth noting that Detorri wasn't originally booked to ride this filly and was meant to partner a debutante for Jeremy Noseda (Fenton was in the saddle but decided or retained to ride one horse for Tom Tate at Beverley). The fact that Detorri takes the ride may significantly shorten the price which isn't ideal. A capable two-year-old, and one that has place claims with a fighting chance of a win.

On form, Golden Tempest is held by Whisper Louise, through Welsh Inlet, but may improve for that initial run. This daughter of Clodovil was slow away at Windsor over 5f and had many lengths to make up but stuck to her guns and battled for a 3rd. Over this 6f and being wiser for the debut a better performance can be expected today. On balance, Swinburn's two-year-old may struggle to beat Whisper Louise but there could be more to come and it wouldn't be the biggest surprise to sneak into the frame.

Brian Meehan has started to turn out a few winners and Mortitia was well backed last time in a competitive heat at Newbury. This daughter of Dansili was a distant fourth and that was a regressive effort compared to her previous performance. It doesn't make encouraging reading to see that Dwyer has chosen to ride Miss Sinatra, who is given preference today.

Of the rest, Tweenie was originally an intended ride for Patrick Hills, which may be a negative. Cheers was hampered last time so difficult to assess, however, a much-improved effort is needed to show a sign of ability.

An outsider with a chance could be Out Of The Storm trained by Simon Dow. The Kempton race which she finished 3rd didn't look very competitive but the way this filly by Elmhurst Boy ran on at the line deserves some respect - as she fairly flew home in the last furlong. It is difficult to assess the merit of that performance although it is a possibility Dow's youngster has ability and will have learned from that experience. Queally has a good strike rate for the yard (although Sanders was originally booked but goes elsewhere).

Of the debutantes, Days Of Summer is worth a mention as Beckett does well with his two-year-olds and features a decent place rate. Owners, Clipper Logistics, have a number of talented horses in training and this 76,000euro buy shouldn't be ignored, especially if backed.

Comment:'Bar the favourite, a weak looking race on paper and a good opportunity for Smart's two-year-old to progress from debut. The wide draw may not have helped and once the favourite had cruised clear it was a battle for the places - unfortunately 4th place. A statistical bet which rarely fails to get a place at least so disappointing to fail on that front.'

An auction race over 6f, where a low draw can be advantageous.

Easy Ticket will not be much of a price but looks difficult to beat after a strong performance on debut when second to Wootton Bassett who is going for the Gimcrack (Group 2) after a good win last evening at Doncaster. Brown has done well with his two-year-olds and John Fretwell always finds a decent prospect or two each season. This chestnut colt by Kheleyf will probably do front-running tactics and it will be a good horse that beats him.

The main opposition comes from Richard Fahey's El Viento, who ran in a fair maiden at Beverley on debut. This £20,000 buy is an attractive, sturdy colt by Compton Place and he definitely has enough ability to win a race. Always slightly struggling to go the pace in a fast run race that day he made good progress in the final furlong and looks a determined type. El Viento should appreciate this stiff climb to the finish and is quite well drawn. It would be a disadvantage if he was slow to find his stride as the favourite is likely to make the running and it would be no easy task to make up a huge amount of ground against a talented individual. Certainly a decent each way bet although it may be a stiff task to beat the favourite, however that has to run its race.

Of the rest, Sleights Boy may improve for the McInnes stable. Their two-year-olds often come on for the run and at a price could have place chances. Of the debutantes Fieldgunner Kirkup comes from a very lucky owner and although David Barron has modest win rate with his runners on their first start it wouldn't be beyond the realms to see a fair run from this breeze-up purchase.

Comment: 'A good-looking colt and an easy winner from Brian Meehan's yard which seems to be coming into form. A talented horse who will be contesting pattern races soon.'

An EBF maiden fillies' race over 7f.

Date With Destiny will be the centre of attention here being the only foal of George Washington. Costing 320,000gns this bay filly has a lot to live up to and time will tell if this two-year-old is a good buy. Richard Hannon can do little wrong this season and owner Mrs J Wood could not have wished for such a good year with the likes of Strong Suit winning at Royal Ascot. Already a short price on the exchanges, this youngster clearly has a reputation but whether that is as much to do with hyperbole is a matter of debate. An exciting runner here but this will be no easy task against some experienced and talented juveniles.

Godolphin are having a fair season and Mahmood Al Zarooni seems to have the knack of winning second time out this season. Pencarrow was another expensive buy at 260,000gns and ran well on debut at Kempton. It is difficult to assess the basic form although the 4th Jetfire has run a big race since, however, she had a poor draw that day which didn't see her true running. Pencarrow has claims although drawn 2 may be a slight negative as the pace is often up the rail.

Zanazzi and Mortitia finished 2nd and 4th respectively behind the talented Cape Dollar and both have chances today. The latter trained by Brian Meehan could narrow the gap as this daughter of Dansili had a wide draw that day and was soon many lengths behind but made good progress to fade in the final furlong. With experience and a higher draw there may not be much between this pair. Meehan's juveniles can improve a good deal for their initial run and this two-year-old has some size and scope. Zanazzi is a talented juvenile and certainly travelled well last time and course and distance experience are all pluses. Both of these runners are fair each way bets against the favourite who for all of the interest is yet to prove a level of ability.

The TNT July Stakes (Group 2) for colts and geldings over 6f.

A small field but a handful of classy two-year-olds.

Elzaam ran a cracking race at Royal Ascot when 2nd in the Coventry Stakes (Group 2), looking the winner everywhere but the line. Michael Jarvis is a talented trainer and his two-year-olds this season have been making winning look easy. A tough race but the best form on offer and a very professional horse.

Godolphin stepped in and bought Neebras after this colt by Oasis Dream ran a great race on debut, behind subsequent Coventry Stakes winner Strong Suit. An odds-on favourite and easy winner at Goodwood, connection will be hoping this bay colt can show his class today. The form of the Goodwood race doesn't merit much consideration and it is a matter of what Neebras can muster when asked a serious question. Clearly a talented individual he still has a lot to prove and this may be a tough task.

Approve is a progressive colt and there is much to like about the way he runs his races. A fairly comfortable winner of the Norfolk Stakes (Group 2) over 5f, this extra furlong should not be a concern and may bring about an improved effort. Highclere Thoroughbred Racing is having a magical season with its two-year-olds and with Memory winning the Cherry Hinton in sparkling form yesterday, connections will be feeling they have the Midas Touch. A big player today.

Libranno made a pleasing start to his career when the lesser fancied of Hannon's runners winning at 25/1. This will be a test for this son of Librettist. Hannon has such an impressive string of talented two-year-olds that he must be respected because many other youngsters could have taken this spot. On form, Libranno has a mountain to climb but on trainer reputation the void may not be so extreme. An interesting runner.

Marston Moor is in the unenviable position of making his debut at Group level which is a very rare occurrence. A breeze-up purchase costing $375,000 and entered for the Gimcrack (Group 2) there is little doubt Mahmood Al Zarooni considers this colt by War Front a talent, however, this would be a truly amazing performance to win on debut - and in truth it would be a miracle.


Bet: 4:05 Warwick - Diamond Penny 1PTEW 4/1 4th
Comment: 'A statistical bet which are generally very strong but unfortunately one of the lesser lights with this Paul Cole two-year-old. Not a particularly strong race but Diamond Penny didn't look the most enthusiastic of souls and ran on at the finish. Frustrating times of late but there will be a turn of fortunes in the next few weeks.'
