Saturday's Thoughts

A slight change to the blog posting today with general thoughts about a few two-year-olds.

1:45 Thirsk

Ezzles is taken to run much better after being too inexperienced on debut. Paul Cole Racing said: 'He was extremely green at Sandown, but was up against a Hannon odds-on shot, who won very nicely. We think he will really come on in time and we like him a lot.' Cole has good statistics at Thirsk and this attractive colt should go well today.

2:10 Newmarket

Handicaps are never the easiest of races to appreciate but Bay Of Fires has been in good form of late and one of the more likelier types for this at a price.

2:20 Thirsk

Barry Hills has his juveniles in fine form and Face The Problem is a talented colt with speed to burn. Under top weight of 9-9 it will be interesting to see if this son of Johannesburg can win this and go on to compete in the Gimcrack (Group 2).

3:55 Newmarket

Theyskens' Theory has been very well backed on the exchanges and with the Meehan two-year-olds coming to form a much improved performance should be seen over this 7f. This American-bred filly,an entrant for the Fillies' mile (Group 1), was slow away on debut and most likely needed the run. With plenty of scope, it would seem that connections are expecting a classier performance this afternoon.

7:55 Lingfield

Dubai Affair ran well over 6f at Salisbury last time from a wide draw and showed good speed before tiring in the final furlong. That was a decent race and over 5f this well-bred filly - and daughter of Palace Affair - has a fighting chance against the favourite Foghorn Leghorn.

Tips:

Comment: 'A statistical bet which usually go well but a hopeless performance from Cole's juvenile. Clearly the stable think something of this two-year-old and time may tell he is capable of better. Certainly more experience is needed and this speedy 5f just didn't suit.'

3:55 Newmarket -Theyskens' Theory 1PTEW 9/2 1st

Comment: 'There was a lot of confidence behind this horse today and no wonder as Meehan's filly won in 'impressive' style.'

An EBF maiden race over 6f on good ground.

Quite an interesting race with a mix of form horses and debutantes.

Brian Meehan's two-year-olds are in much better form now and Hero From Zero is a likely improver after starting a 50/1 outsider in a decent maiden at Windsor. This bay colt by Invincible Spirit ran well for much of that race before tiring in the final furlong and should strip a lot fitter today. An entrant for the Mill Reef Stakes (Group 2), a big run will be needed to have any hopes of competing at a higher level. A lively chance.

Ice Cool Bex is another colt of interest. The McBride stable is a professional outfit and know their horses. It bodes well that this son of Iceman ran at Newmarket on debut and significant that Fallon was booked early for this ride. A very cheap buy at 800gns, Ice Cool Bex is an attractive colt and wasn't pressed on debut to run a fair race against a few talented/experienced juveniles. McBride has a fair win and place rate with his fancied juveniles on their second start and should be respected if backed.

Another two-year-old with a similarly progressive profile is Proper Charlie trained by William Knight. Quite an expensive buy at 58,000gns as a yearling and half-brother to Bahia Breeze, this is a good-looking bay with size and scope for improvement. Relatively fancied for a tough Yarmouth maiden, this son of Cadeaux Genereux is dropping back a furlong today. Knight should have this two-year-old fit and ready for his second start and I would be surprised if this youngster doesn't win a race this season. On looks alone, this is a fair sort. If relatively fancied in the betting, a big run should be on the cards.

Of the debutantes, Janood has been supported on the exchanges. Costing 150,000gns, this son of Medicean comes from the in-form Saeed Bin Suroor - whose last 3 out of 4 debutantes have won. Godolphin's two-year-olds are never easy to assess on debut but they usually fire in a few winners this time of the year and there seems a good deal of confidence behind this runner.

Of the rest, Labarinto hails from Michael Stoute's stable. An entrant for the Champagne Stake (Group 2) and Royal Lodge Stakes (Group 2) this Adulla-owned two-year-old should be respected. It has been noticeable that many of the stable's youngsters have been improving for the run and the betting should be informative to the chances of this runner. Very few juveniles win over 13/2 on debut for this stable.

Not the easiest race to assess with a number pf progressive types who are likely to leave debut runs behind them. The betting will be informative to the respective chances of most. Hero To Zero comes from a stable that has finally hit form and should run a big race. If fancied in the betting Ice Cool Bex has strong place claims.

Michael Jarvis can do no wrong with his juveniles - the majority winning on debut. Warm Breeze an 80,000gns buy and daughter of Oasis Dream is likely to go off a short priced favourite. A Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1) entrant, along side many sales races, she is an interesting newcomer.

The main form opposition is Scantily Clad, trained by Ed McMahon and owned by John Fretwell. A relatively cheap purchase, this daughter of Acclamation was well backed on debut at Nottingham but faded after showing bright speed. Whether something was amiss that day or unfit is a matter for debate but this team do well with their youngsters and McMahon has strong place claims with his fancied runners on their second start. An each way alternative with the favourite still to prove its worth.

A maiden fillies' race over 6f.

Not much form to go on here.

Royalorien ran well on debut when 2nd at Nottingham. This bay filly by Royal Applause was inexperienced that day and always struggling to go the pace but flew home at the finish and unlucky not to win. That looked a decent race and Knight should find more improvement and inexperience will be a plus. This is likely to be a more competitive race but that initial run will put Royalorien in a good position for another big run.

Brian Meehan' two-year-olds are in much better form and Brevity is fancied in the betting which is an encouraging sign. It is interesting that Dwyer was originally booked to ride Royalorien but may be obliged to take this mount. Meehan's juveniles generally come on for the run and he doesn't feature the greatest win rate on debut.

Ed Dunlop and Kieren Fallon have been a winning team this year with their two-year-olds and probably reason why Sharnberry has ben backed on the exchanges. This daughter of Shamardal cost 120,000gns as a yearling and one of the more likely debutantes. However, it is never easy to win on a race course bow.

Another debutante worth noting is the Hannon representative owned by Mrs J Wood who must be one of the luckiest owners going with a string of talented two-year-olds. This 110,000gns purchase should be respected and one for the short list.

Bet: 4:35 Goodwood - Royalorien 1PTEW (4/1) Unp
Comment: 'Never seemed to be travelling and hanging from the start. Little doubt Knight's two-year-old disappointed as she has ability but far from ideal.'

A maiden race for colts and geldings over 6f with nearly £10,000 to the winner.

No outstanding form horse on show but a few with potential for better and one or two debutantes of interest.

Mark Johnston's two-year-olds have finally hit form and plenty of winners should come his way over the next few weeks. Golden Hinde ran well on debut, when beaten by the more experienced Next Edition at Redcar over 7f. An attractive bay colt by Red Ransom and 95,000gns yearling, this youngster is stepping down a furlong after showing fair speed on his initial start. With a Champagne Stakes (Group 2) entry it could be the case the stable fancy an improved performance today. Not the easiest of horses to asses, but fancied on the exchanges, and a gut feeling a big run will be forthcoming.

Pabusar is an interesting representative for Beckett, after being well backed for debut at Ffos Las at the end of May. Nothing much went right for him that day with getting unsettled in the stalls and a slow start - giving the impression everything was happening too quickly. A sturdy-looking gelding by Oasis Dream, it speaks well that connections are opting for a race at Goodwood for their next start and a more professional display will be seen today.

Richard Hannon had six horses entered to run in this race and of the raced Welsh Dancer is on a recovery mission after failing to show anything at Newbury last time over 7f, when there must have been something amiss. There was much to like about the way this son of Dubawi finished his race at Ascot on debut - running on well at the finish as if this 6f would be ideal. On that form, Welsh Dancer would come here with a favourites chance but the disappointment at Newbury leaves a question mark. Clearly it is encouraging that Hannon decides to take this race rather than an easier option and it would be a good sign if this juvenile was backed.

Straight Line has run creditably on all outings from 5 - 7 furlongs and deserves to win a small race. Although one of the main fancies in the betting, I think Jarvis' two-year-old will struggle to win.

Of the debutantes Big Issue looks set to go off favourite. A breeze-up purchase at £140,000, Hannon has a wealth of two-year-olds who could have gone for this. Many of their expensive buys are primed to run a big race on debut and in a maiden where those with experience have something to prove many a punter will be favouring Big Issue. The betting is usually the best guide to individual chances and any weakness near the off could be a negative. At a short price a juvenile I would rather watch than bet.

Macho's Magic is worth a mention as Nicholls has a pretty fair place rate on debut with his two-year-olds and at a price could sneak into the frame.

A difficult race to asses with a number of potential improvers. With nearly £10,000 to the winner it is likely there will be a couple of talented juveniles within this field and it doesn't look a straight forward contest. Golden Hinde looks the type to run well and it will be interesting to see if Welsh Dancer can return to form.

Bloodsweatandtears has a leading chance of making this a winning second start. William Knight holds this colt by Barathea in high regard illustrated by Champagne Stakes (Group 2) and Royal Lodge (Group 2) entries. Backed for a competitive maiden at Newmarket, this two-year-old has many positives and an attractive colt, too. He didn't have much luck in-running on debut - in a race that is working out very well - but showed enough to appeal for a race at auction level with hopes of progressing to pattern class if these lofty entries are realistic. Knight has a good record at this course with his juveniles and decent win and place claims with his fancied runners on their second start. Connections will be expecting a big run today. The only negative is that Bloodsweatandtears has to give a fair amount of weight away to a couple of the main protagonists today, however, he looks a potentially talented juvenile.

Alan Bailey has done well with his two-year-olds this season - the talented Amwell Pinot to name one - and Dazzling Valentine looks a determined filly. After needing the run on debut, this daughter of Oratorio had no luck at Chester from a wide draw but ran very well considering the problems she encountered that day. The most recent run at Kempton showed a willing attitude after running wide for much of that race. This compact filly, if not a little on the small side, will appreciate a handy weight, especially with Eaton claiming 7lb. Form lines suggest she has the beating of No Poppy and Zamina, through Danzigs Grandchild, although these two juveniles should be respected. It is difficult to equate how Dazzling Valentine compares to Bloodsweatandtears, who looks to be the class opposition. The weight difference with help and a determined attitude give each way claims.

No Poppy has been running respectable races, especially so with the blinkers which are removed today with stepping up to 7f for the first time. Easterby's filly is one of those horses that catches your eye as she always looks a shade unlucky, running on at the finish but never quite getting involved. This 7f should see her true running today and with a healthy weight concession she should have no excuses. The run at Catterick can be forgotten as the wide draw and running even wider throughout gave little hope that day. The performance at Redcar leaves me wondering if this scopey two-year-old will be a couple of lengths inferior to the likes of the above mentioned. Perhaps this extra furlong will bring about a transformation, as without the blinkers more holding up tactics may be employed and she could finish with some purpose.

Zamina, trained by Sylvester Kirk, is a difficult one to assess after a slow start at Newbury, when finishing just behind No Poppy. Whether this daughter of Hawk Wing was flattered that day is a matter of debate. On the other side of the coin, she made up a huge amount of ground and was running on well at the finish suggesting this extra furlong would suit. Kirk has a decent string of two-year-olds this season and should be respected although I would rather watch and learn a little more than bet at relatively short odds.

Piccarello, Titus Two and Algurayn have a similar level of form but need to improve. Piccarello's trainer - Mark Tompkins - does very well at Yarmouth and may sneak a place but others are preferred. At a price Algurayn has similar claims.

An interesting auction event and the winner will be a fair sort for this grade. Bloodsweatandtears will be the main focus of attention - an attractive colt and held in high regard by the stable. Dazzling Valentine is a battler and has a handy weight advantage so one to fear. At the odds on offer it could be best to take a watching brief.

By all accounts a weak race and it will be something of a surprise if Earl Wild doesn't win this in style. After a determined effort in a competitive maiden at Musselburgh on debut, Howard Johnson's bay colt by Kodiac had no luck at Chester when running wide - which made the difference between winning and losing. On this more conventional track there should be less concerns today. A capable two-year-old who should win this and take his chance at a higher level.

The rest of the opposition have shown little form and need a marked improvement to upset favourite backers. The most likely danger comes from Ann Duffield's Riverdale, an £8,000 colt by Choisir. On average, it is unlikely an unraced juvenile will have the ability of a proven form horse such as Earl Wild. It is worth noting that Duffield has a 33% strike rate at the course and has had a number of horses run big races on debut.

Earl Wild should win this in handsome style and then connections will no doubt consider the Gimcrack (Group 2).

A restricted auction race over 5f.

The majority of these look poor but this is an interesting race in its own way with a couple of debutantes worth noting.

A selection of form horses on show.

Kodiac Star is an attractive filly but limited. Osbourne has tried a variety of distances to find the key to this daughter of Kodiac but little has worked so far. She is probably best suited by this 5f, however, even at this lowly level doesn't inspire confidence.

Best Be Careful has speed to burn but founders in the final furlong. Usher's two-year-olds are in decent form and this track will suit. Her last effort at Nottingham illustrated an element of ability in what was a poor event but another to look vulnerable.

Of those with form Upark Flyer has a fighting chance and strong place claims. Patrick Morris is a capable trainer and often goes unnoticed. This filly by Piccolo has shown ability on her last two starts and should appreciate this 5f, being a compact sort. With Fahy in the saddle, claiming 5lb, and bottom weight, she has every advantage going and this looks a fine opportunity to win a race. A two-year-old of limited ability but a fair candidate for a auction race of this nature.

It is never easy to win on debut with everything happening so quickly but two juveniles making their race course bows are worth a mention.

Prince Titus, an 8,000gns brother to Miami Gator, comes from a stable which should always be respected, that of Linda Stubbs. A rare visitor to Lingfield, many of their two-year-olds need the run, which can muddy the waters a touch when trying to appreciate the likelihood of a decent performance on debut. However, in the last two years Stubbs has sent out a few winners at the first time of asking. The point of interest with Prince Titus is that he was originally entered to run in the Brocklesby Stakes, which seems a very long time ago now. Clearly there must have been a few problems along the way for this gelding by Titus Livius not to have run. In the past, Stubbs has entered a few decent prospects for the Brocklesby and it could be the case that this juvenile has ability. A difficult juvenile to assess but one worth noting especially if backed.

Alan Jarvis is a canny trainer and Smart Performance is an interesting runner in what looks to be a poor maiden. Owner Geoffrey Bishop has many horses with Jarvis and knows a good horse when he has one. It is encouraging to see that his bay colt by Acclamation has been given a Gimcrack (Group 2) entry. A cheap purchase at 3,500gns this colt could have ability. The dam, Green Eyes, was unraced but trained by Roger Charlton costing 230,000gns suggesting a decent breeding line. Jarvis features a poor win rate on debut suggesting that most of his two-year-olds come on for the run, however, Navajo Chief was a 50/1 winner on debut for this owner last year.

Both of these debutantes are difficult to assess but these entries are worth noting as they could be significant pointers.

A restricted auction race over this quick 5f where a high draw can be advantageous.

Cathedral Spires sets a fair standard over 6f but it begs the question how this gelding will fare over this minimum trip. Howard Johnson's youngster has shown speed, however, it is never quite as easy to drop in distance and may slightly struggle for pace but will certainly be running on at the line if maintaining a handy position. One of the more likely types but this quick 5f doesn't look ideal.

Linda Stubbs is a talented trainer and there is much to like about Ice Trooper, who is all speed. This gelding by Iceman ran well over 5f at Beverley when fancied to run a big race but bumped into the talented Ladies Are Forever. At Redcar he once again showed good speed to lead for 5f and tired in the final furlong in a race that has worked out very well. There is little doubt Ice Trooper has the pace to lead most of these a merry dance. The downside to such positives could be the draw. Stall 1 is far from ideal as the pace is often on the rail and runners on the extreme can find themselves off the pace or alternatively try to get a handy position and use too much energy in the early stages only to tire at the finish. I can imagine Stubbs will want to use this two-year-olds pace and it will be a matter of lasting to the line. A strong candidate with a higher draw but stall 1 tempers the enthusiasm.

Mrs Ann Duffield has done well with her two-year-olds this season, with a number running well on debut. Indieslad is fancied in the betting and it is encouraging to see Seb Sanders booked to ride. It is never easy for a debutante to win on debut especially over a quick 5f where experience is invaluable. Duffield has fair place claims with her fancied runners on debut and with a good draw could run a decent race.

Pinapple Pete is a rare runner for Paul Cole at Thirsk and Hanagan looks a significant booking. This bay gelding by Compton Place was quite fancied on debut at Windsor but ran no race at all. The betting will be the best guide to this ones chance and if well backed I would anticipate a big run.

Ed McMahon should always be respected and Look Who's Kool comes from a family that usually win a race or two.

1:50 Bath

A very restricted auction race over this extended 5f (161y).

This should be an ideal opportunity for Fantasy Fry to gain his first win. A progressive, and attractive colt by Avonbridge, this bay was given a little too much to do last time at Bath and finished well but all to late and in many ways an unlucky loser. The majority of the field look pretty poor and Morrison's two-year-old is improving with each run and will be primed today.

The main opposition is likely to come from Mick Channon's Rigolleto and familiar colours of owners Box 41. A 28,000gns yearling by Ad Valorem, this two-year-old wouldn't have to be talented to win this on debut although it will be a stiff task against juveniles with experience. Channon doesn't have a very high strike rate with juveniles on their first start and a number to have run at Bath seem to come on particularly for the outing often slow from the stalls. It will be interesting to see whether this colt follows a similar pattern today. Box 41 are lucky owners and the majority of their two-year-olds go on to win at some level but inexperience can be costly at this track and more of a watching brief.

Thomas Tompion should be noted in the betting and if substantially backed expect a big run.

U A E Storm finished behind a talented horse in Deep South when second on debut at Kempton. This American-bred colt cost 50,000gns and David Simcock indicated that this two-year-old would improve for the run. The third Tick Tock Lover has run respectably since, although the form is probably nothing out of the ordinary and on a line through Diamond Penny there isn't a huge difference between Danzig's Grandchild and Sky Falcon. A slight negative is that Simcock doesn't feature the best win rate with his fancied juveniles on their second start although the place rate is fair. If improvement is forthcoming, then a decent run can be expected, however, at short odds may be one to oppose.

David Lanigan is a clever trainer and Menadati caught the eye on debut at Sandown. After a slow start, this colt by More Than Ready ran on with encouragement, to finish mid division without being pressed. A nice-looking bay with size and scope, it isn't a surprise to see money for this one on the exchanges although there is still a lot to prove beyond that initial effort. Lanigan has good place statistics with his fancied juveniles on their second start but often struggles to win. An interesting runner but a bet on potential rather than proven ability.

Nothing To Hide has run well on his last two races and is a robust sort who will take his racing. The form of his Windsor race is no more than average and the 2nd at Lingfield is slightly difficult to appreciate as Midnight Feast didn't give his true running from a wide draw. Whether this step up to 7f will suit is a matter of debate but it is sensible to consider the trainer knows best. This gelding by Barathea has enough ability to win at auction level, however, this does have the feel of a competitive race.

As noted above, Danzig's Grandchild and Sky Falcon have form lines with the potential favourite and the Warwick race may have been a stronger race than it first seemed. The 5th, Highlife Dancer, has won a moderate race since and at a price they could have a fighting chance.

Tips:
2:30 Lingfield - Jacobs Son 1PTEW (4/1) 2nd

Comment: 'Looked to be struggling to go the pace round home bend but finished strongly and just failed.'

6:15 Leicester - Danzigs Grandchild 1PTEW (12/1) 5th

This looks a match between Malpas Missile and the debutante Lamasaas.

It is something of a surprise that Malpas Missile hasn't won a race as she clearly sets a fair level of ability. In truth, a couple of outings at Chester have not suited this daughter of Elusive City and a more conventional track should see a big run today. Tom Dascombe hasn't reached the heights he set last year and to be fair the majority of his two-year-olds are limited this season but this bay filly is one of his string worthy of note.

Lamasaas, an American-bred colt by Henny Hughes could be a class act. A costly buy at $230,000, it is encouraging that Hills has entered this youngster (one of five for the stable) for the Gimcrack (Group 2). Hills sent out Shropshire to win well at Haydock who is similarly entered for this prestigious York race over 6f. That looked a moderate contest and the likes of Malpas Missile will mean Hills' runner will have to be fit and ready to prevail today.

Malpass Missile has the proven ability and will take some beating.

An EBF maiden fillies' race over 6f.

An intriguing contest with a number of form horses opposing with varying price tags.

Mama Lulu is trying to make it third time lucky after finishing second on her last two starts. A beaten favourite twice doesn't make her a punters' friend and connections must be disappointed not to have taken the $575,000, but not sold, at the sales. This daughter of Kingmambo is an attractive filly but she does seem to have her quirks. It might just be the case this Bell runner, with Turner in the saddle, will win but there will be plenty wondering whether she will be another beaten favourite. The form of both starts is difficult to assess as the race at Doncaster, if anything, has not been boosted by a couple of runners down the field and the Pontefract race, bar the winner, looked moderate at best. Perhaps a second to Zabeel Park was a good performance? At worst Mama Lulu has an element of ability with the possibility of more to come. There will be no excuses for today's running as there are proven form horses in the field. This filly hung quite markedly at Pontefract when pressed and may be one to watch today.

Pam Sly has been unlucky not to have found a winner in Whisper Louise by now after a number of consistent efforts, only to be denied by one or two capable juveniles. A rather small filly - but a determined soul - she ran well at Ripon over 5f when narrowly beaten in a large field. It is questionable whether this bay filly is better over 6f or not. She ran well at Pontefract, however, they went no pace early - and pulled fiercely - and then out classed by the talented Sonning Rose. Whisper Louise has enough ability to win a race although in theory this could be a step up in class, being a maiden rather than auction event. It is worth noting that Detorri wasn't originally booked to ride this filly and was meant to partner a debutante for Jeremy Noseda (Fenton was in the saddle but decided or retained to ride one horse for Tom Tate at Beverley). The fact that Detorri takes the ride may significantly shorten the price which isn't ideal. A capable two-year-old, and one that has place claims with a fighting chance of a win.

On form, Golden Tempest is held by Whisper Louise, through Welsh Inlet, but may improve for that initial run. This daughter of Clodovil was slow away at Windsor over 5f and had many lengths to make up but stuck to her guns and battled for a 3rd. Over this 6f and being wiser for the debut a better performance can be expected today. On balance, Swinburn's two-year-old may struggle to beat Whisper Louise but there could be more to come and it wouldn't be the biggest surprise to sneak into the frame.

Brian Meehan has started to turn out a few winners and Mortitia was well backed last time in a competitive heat at Newbury. This daughter of Dansili was a distant fourth and that was a regressive effort compared to her previous performance. It doesn't make encouraging reading to see that Dwyer has chosen to ride Miss Sinatra, who is given preference today.

Of the rest, Tweenie was originally an intended ride for Patrick Hills, which may be a negative. Cheers was hampered last time so difficult to assess, however, a much-improved effort is needed to show a sign of ability.

An outsider with a chance could be Out Of The Storm trained by Simon Dow. The Kempton race which she finished 3rd didn't look very competitive but the way this filly by Elmhurst Boy ran on at the line deserves some respect - as she fairly flew home in the last furlong. It is difficult to assess the merit of that performance although it is a possibility Dow's youngster has ability and will have learned from that experience. Queally has a good strike rate for the yard (although Sanders was originally booked but goes elsewhere).

Of the debutantes, Days Of Summer is worth a mention as Beckett does well with his two-year-olds and features a decent place rate. Owners, Clipper Logistics, have a number of talented horses in training and this 76,000euro buy shouldn't be ignored, especially if backed.

Tip:
Bet: 2:30 Ayr - Loukoumi 1PTEW (4/1) 4th
Comment:'Bar the favourite, a weak looking race on paper and a good opportunity for Smart's two-year-old to progress from debut. The wide draw may not have helped and once the favourite had cruised clear it was a battle for the places - unfortunately 4th place. A statistical bet which rarely fails to get a place at least so disappointing to fail on that front.'

Only one two-year-old race today - an EBF maiden over 7f.

Not the easiest of races to measure the form of some of these juveniles.

Next Edition, from the Howard Johnson stable, has run well on both starts over 7f, racing over course and distance on debut. A bay gelding by Antonius Pius, he is quite a leggy sort and a touch on the weak side although a durable juvenile on his first two efforts. The form of the debut run is solid and a similar performance should be seen today.

Residence And Spa is an attractive gelding by Dubai Destination and a progressive horse. Easterby's representative ran well last time at Musselburgh and wasn't pressed when his chance of winning had gone. Polar Kite, who finished second, has since gone on to win. Being third in such a small field, it is difficult to know how true a run race that was at Musselburgh, although this youngster owned by Jim McGrath was fancied in the betting. Connections will no doubt by trying their best today and Residence And Spa has to be respected.

Mrs D J Sanderson has done well with her small string of two-year-olds and knows a winner when she sees one. Piccoluck ran a respectable debut at Newcastle when a clear second. It will be interesting to see whether this step up to 7f suits. Money for this stable is a significant sign and the general level of form is fair.

Ollon is an expensive breeze-up purchase at 75,000gns. An American-bred colt by Mr Greeley this distance should not pose a problem and it could be significant that this two-year-old has been well backed on the exchanges considering Fahey trained the third (Goldenveil) who finished on the heels of Next Edition, so they may have a form line with the likely favourite. Fahey has fair win and place claims on debut and his juveniles are usually fit and ready to run a big race. Owners, Keep Racing, formerly had runners with Karl Burke, also have the consistent Tepmokea with their new handler. Certainly one of the most interesting candidates, especially if starting favourite.

An EBF maiden over 7f.

Major Art will go off favourite for this after a promising debut at Newmarket when finishing 5th. Hannon's string remains is superb form and it is encouraging that this son of Compton Place, a 95,000gns breeze-up purchase, has been given a stakes race entry. A fluent runner, this two-year-old will be a bit wiser today from a good draw. The form of the Newmarket race - although likely to be decent with nearly £10,000 to the winner - is still a little unproven so it may pay to be a little cautious at short odds. Certainly an interesting juvenile from a stable that can do little wrong.

Chris Wall is a clever trainer and good at placing his horses. Midnight Rider a bay colt by Red Ransom should improve for his debut at Doncaster and this 7f. This two-year-old was relatively fancied on debut and a little keen, showing signs of inexperience, but an element of ability. This extra furlong should give him the edge over Silken Thoughts who finished upsides and a progressive sort. If fancied in the betting, this bay colt should run a big race.

Dennis Coakley has been in fine form with the small string of two-year-olds and Hard Bargain was narrowly beaten at Salisbury on debut over 6f. That was an average maiden - but good enough to give him a shout - and this step up to 7f should help. This colt by Refuse To Bend looked fit and ready that day and may have to find a little more to win but a juvenile that should be respected.

Of the debutantes, Christmas Aria is an interesting runner. Simon Dow is often forgotten but this colt by Oratorio could turn out to be a Christmas Cracker - the name of the mare - as this 30,000gns yearling has been given a stakes race entry and Seb Sanders is a significant jockey booking. The draw is not ideal and inexperience makes any juvenile winning on debut a tough ask but at a price I can see this two-year-old running a fair race today and certainly one to note for the future.

A better day's racing with a number of meetings.

An auction race over 6f, where a low draw can be advantageous.

Easy Ticket will not be much of a price but looks difficult to beat after a strong performance on debut when second to Wootton Bassett who is going for the Gimcrack (Group 2) after a good win last evening at Doncaster. Brown has done well with his two-year-olds and John Fretwell always finds a decent prospect or two each season. This chestnut colt by Kheleyf will probably do front-running tactics and it will be a good horse that beats him.

The main opposition comes from Richard Fahey's El Viento, who ran in a fair maiden at Beverley on debut. This £20,000 buy is an attractive, sturdy colt by Compton Place and he definitely has enough ability to win a race. Always slightly struggling to go the pace in a fast run race that day he made good progress in the final furlong and looks a determined type. El Viento should appreciate this stiff climb to the finish and is quite well drawn. It would be a disadvantage if he was slow to find his stride as the favourite is likely to make the running and it would be no easy task to make up a huge amount of ground against a talented individual. Certainly a decent each way bet although it may be a stiff task to beat the favourite, however that has to run its race.

Of the rest, Sleights Boy may improve for the McInnes stable. Their two-year-olds often come on for the run and at a price could have place chances. Of the debutantes Fieldgunner Kirkup comes from a very lucky owner and although David Barron has modest win rate with his runners on their first start it wouldn't be beyond the realms to see a fair run from this breeze-up purchase.

Tips:
2:00 Newbury - Eshoog 1PTEW (13/2) 4th

Comment: 'Looked to be going well with the lead but faded in the last 100y to miss out on a place. A capable two-year-old who may be better suited by a quicker surface and easy 6f. This may turn out to be a fair race.'

2:35 Newbury - Waiter's Dream 1PTWIN (3/1) 1st

Comment: 'A good-looking colt and an easy winner from Brian Meehan's yard which seems to be coming into form. A talented horse who will be contesting pattern races soon.'

Maher ran well on debut when a 33/1 shot at Newmarket over 7f. A good-looking colt by Medaglia D'Oro, this American-bred two-year-old could well improve from that debut. Simcock stated that this is a good actioned juvenile and pinpointed this race for Maher's second start, which he won last year with Dubawi Phantom. The form of the Newmarket race his holding up quite well although with so many juveniles representing Godolphin that day it is difficult to assess the fitness of individuals. It is worth noting that Simcock features only a fair strike rate with relatively fancied runners on their second start, which slightly tempers the enthusiam.

It seems significant that Chain Lightning is fancied in the betting after finishing third from last at Sandown when priced 4/1. After such a poor effort there must be some confidence in the ability of this colt by Hurricane Run, a 55,000euro purchase. On form this youngster has shown little but it would be a mistake to disregard any of Hannon's two-year-olds, especially if the betting indicated there is better to come.

Memorabilia is one of few two-year-olds to have shown ability for Mark Johnston, who has had a terrible year with his juveniles. The form of the Doncaster race is difficult to assess, although the first and second have ability. Jaahiz won well the other day when dropped back to 6f. This colt by Dansili is a big galloping sort. Royston Ffrench may employ front-running tactics at a course Johnston does well. The rest of the field where closing on the leaders that day at Doncaster and it may be the case that they too have ability although it is difficult to quite appreciate this point as yet. The form of the Johnston two-year-olds doesn't inspire confidence and even though Memorabilia has claims it may be best to take a watching brief today or wait for the stable to find some much-needed form.

On form, Cuban Quality is held by Memorabilia.

Zakon was quite well backed on debut and last time at Folkestone. That looked a pretty moderate race and Queally gave this bay colt a huge amount to do after being held up off the pace. Quite an attractive sort, it wouldn't be a surprise to find connections have hopes for this runner and probably sit in a handy position today. Improvement is needed but there could be more to come.

Surrey Star showed good speed at Sandown before tiring in the final furlong. Roger Teal is a capable trainer and his runner could well follow similar tactics today with a bold, front-running display.

An interesting but difficult race to assess. Hannon's a likely improver.

An EBF fillies' maiden over 6f.

Sir Michael Stoute has run only four two-year-olds this season and Apace could follow the trend of sending out another winner on its second start. Owned by Cheveley Park Stud, cost 350,000gns as a yearling, ridden by Ryan Moore - ticks in all the right boxes. This fillie by Oasis Dream needed the experience on debut when finishing 4th at 9/2. After a bright start, she was held up off the pace and then found all manner of problems in running before sprinting to the line. The general level of the form is nothing special but there will be much more to come today with fitness and experience on side. A beautifully bred two-year-old and attractive filly, Apace will take some beating here.

Unless there is something of a surprise, there look to be three main contenders. The two form horses - Freckenham and Spennymoor - need to raise their game.

The former, trained by Bell, hasn't looked the most willing of candidates and Turner has needed to bustle along this filly by Exceed And Excell on both starts and although she has run on it all seems rather laboured. With experience, this two-year-old will progress and on this turning track Turner will need to sit handy as Freckenham looks the type to be outpaced. Ideally 7f would probably suit.

Spennymoor was second string when a moderate 5th to the impressive winner Sweet Cecily. A daughter of Exceed And Excel costing 120,000gns as a foal, she is rather a small filly. Mahmood Al Zarooni has done well with many of his string on their second start so it wouldn't be wise to completely rule out this runner although a fair amount of improvement is needed to get competitive here.

One of the most interesting runners is the debutante Formidable Girl. A $100,000 yearling and already entered for the Lowther Stakes (Group 2), this American-bred filly by Roman Ruler could well be a two-year-old held in high regard by the Ryan Stable. Owner Mike McGeever similarly entered Raddy 'Ell Pauline in last year's contest when finishing down the field at York. Ryan is a talented trainer and his juveniles can win on debut although his strike rate is nothing out of the ordinary. The majority of his debutante winners are price 7/1 and less. Formidable Girl is certainly one of the more interesting juveniles for this race but will need to be a talent to beat Apace. This turning track is not ideal when racing against experienced opposition and if connections rate this youngster they are unlikely to knock her about to win on her racecourse bow and for that reason will need to be blessed with an abundance of natural ability.

A restricted auction maiden over 5f.

Novalist has a decent chance today after something of a roller coaster career so far. After a satisfactory debut this gelding by Avonbridge unseated his rider at Catterick. Perhaps such misfortune disguised the initial promise shown by Bastiman's two-year-old as he was sent off a 100/1 shot on his next start at Ripon and redeemed himself with a faultless 3rd. That was a strong race for the level and Novalist has plenty of speed and should sit handy today. As long as he is on his best behaviour, a big run can be expected.

Nigel Tinkler has a capable string of two-year-olds this season and Saltergate has enough ability to win an auction race. Another gelding by Avonbridge, he has been a little unlucky. Running on like a train at Beverley on debut and then hampered at Redcar, when storming home once more, most would have thought a big run was on the cards at Carlisel but Saltergate ran no race at all. There must have been something amiss that day and after a short break connections will be hoping for a return to form. It is always difficult to back individuals after such a poor effort as this juvenile will be priced on his best form - and that can be a risky business. With course and distance experience, Tinkler will be hoping for a determined effort today and this gelding could be a strong finisher if back to his best.

Hawk Moth was outclassed by a decent two-year-old in Leiba Leiba at Yarmouth on debut when this son of Hawk Wing finished 3rd. On breeding you would imagine this bay colt would appreciate further but Spearing is a talented trainer and good at placing his horses. His youngsters feature good win and place statistics when fancied on their second start and even though the form doesn't look that strong there could be more to come.

Bonnie Millie has been backed on the exchanges, which is encouraging. Second string on debut, when hampered at the start, this filly by Compton Place doesn't make much appeal on form but it would be significant if fancied in the betting as Fahey has good win and place statistics with juveniles on their second start.

Of the debutantes, Katell is worth noting. D Arundale is a lucky owner with Stubbs and Saxford was a notable two-year-old for this stable. In general, Stubbs doesn't feature the greatest win rate on debut although they had a couple stoked-up last season. It is probably best to take a watching brief today unless well backed.

After no two-year-old racing on Sunday it is good to have a few races of interest today.

A restricted auction race over the extended 5f (216y).

This should be a good opportunity for Restless Bay to gain his first win. After a promising debut at Doncaster this son of Elusive City looked to have a big chance at Haydock but things didn't go Hollinshead's way. This brown colt has a lot of size and scope but clearly needs more racing to gain experience. It takes this two-year-old a while to get motoring and at Haydock had a lot to do in the final furlong and then being hampered concluded any hopes of a win although Restless Bay ran on in encouraging style. It is debatable whether this turning course of Wolverhampton will suit as he looks much more of a galloper than a natural speed horse. A slow start would be another negative. At this level, even with a few concerns, this youngster should be running on well at the line and a live chance to take this auction.

Heartbreak went off favourite at Hamilton when finishing 3rd. It may be the case that Fahey's two-year-old was expected to do better but it was a fair run against a few experienced horses. Fahey has been in such good form that it would be no surprise to see an improved performance today as the trainer features much higher win and place statistics on second start and this doesn't look the strongest of contests.

Of the debutantes Imaginary World is worth noting as the McMahon/Fretwell combination is often a recipe for success. This filly by Exceed And Excel was a relatively cheap yearling at 18,000gns. From a wide draw and turning track this isn't the best course to run on debut especially against experienced opposition. However, McMahon is a very good trainer and his juveniles often run well on their racecourse bow. At present, this runner doesn't seem that fancied on the exchanges but if backed it could be significant.

A decent field for this auction race over 5f.

The majority of these do not make much interest.

A few speedy types may turn this into a burn-up with Tilliemint and Welsh Inlet natural pace-setters. The former trained by Tim Easterby ran well when the blinkers were applied for the first time at York. Perhaps this daughter of Acclamation was gifted an easy lead on that occasion as her performance at Carlisle next time could be viewed as slightly disappointing. She has plenty of speed but struggles to finish her races.

Welsh Inlet is an attractive filly and definitely looks the type to try and win this from the front. The form of the Ripon race, especially the far side group which she raced, has been boosted by a couple of winners (Belle Bayardo and Blaze Of Thunder). After a narrow loss at Windsor, once again she proved there is just enough ability to win a small race. Willaims is a talented trainer and will get a win at some point. This daughter of Kheleyf has one weakness - that she doesn't finishes her races and like Tilliemint may be vulnerable in the final furlong.

Master Macho is a talented two-year-old at best but seems to be regressing and on recent form is held by Tilliemint and Earl Wild.

The latter trained by Howard Johnson is the class horse of the race. This breeze-up purchase at 32,000euros was fit and ready to run at Musselburgh and backed from huge odds. A sturdy-looking colt by Kodiac, he has plenty of speed but settled well for his first start and ran a cracking race. That was a strong maiden and this two-year-old is held in high regard by the stable and already features an entry for the Gimcrack (Group 2). The major concern is the high draw (8). This youngster could well have the ability to win from any draw but whether they try to get to the rail or sit in behind is a matter of debate. It would be a major handicap if this colt tried to get to the front and had to run wide. Earl Wild has the potential to win races and must be respected today.

Date With Destiny will be the centre of attention here being the only foal of George Washington. Costing 320,000gns this bay filly has a lot to live up to and time will tell if this two-year-old is a good buy. Richard Hannon can do little wrong this season and owner Mrs J Wood could not have wished for such a good year with the likes of Strong Suit winning at Royal Ascot. Already a short price on the exchanges, this youngster clearly has a reputation but whether that is as much to do with hyperbole is a matter of debate. An exciting runner here but this will be no easy task against some experienced and talented juveniles.

Godolphin are having a fair season and Mahmood Al Zarooni seems to have the knack of winning second time out this season. Pencarrow was another expensive buy at 260,000gns and ran well on debut at Kempton. It is difficult to assess the basic form although the 4th Jetfire has run a big race since, however, she had a poor draw that day which didn't see her true running. Pencarrow has claims although drawn 2 may be a slight negative as the pace is often up the rail.

Zanazzi and Mortitia finished 2nd and 4th respectively behind the talented Cape Dollar and both have chances today. The latter trained by Brian Meehan could narrow the gap as this daughter of Dansili had a wide draw that day and was soon many lengths behind but made good progress to fade in the final furlong. With experience and a higher draw there may not be much between this pair. Meehan's juveniles can improve a good deal for their initial run and this two-year-old has some size and scope. Zanazzi is a talented juvenile and certainly travelled well last time and course and distance experience are all pluses. Both of these runners are fair each way bets against the favourite who for all of the interest is yet to prove a level of ability.

The TNT July Stakes (Group 2) for colts and geldings over 6f.

A small field but a handful of classy two-year-olds.

Elzaam ran a cracking race at Royal Ascot when 2nd in the Coventry Stakes (Group 2), looking the winner everywhere but the line. Michael Jarvis is a talented trainer and his two-year-olds this season have been making winning look easy. A tough race but the best form on offer and a very professional horse.

Godolphin stepped in and bought Neebras after this colt by Oasis Dream ran a great race on debut, behind subsequent Coventry Stakes winner Strong Suit. An odds-on favourite and easy winner at Goodwood, connection will be hoping this bay colt can show his class today. The form of the Goodwood race doesn't merit much consideration and it is a matter of what Neebras can muster when asked a serious question. Clearly a talented individual he still has a lot to prove and this may be a tough task.

Approve is a progressive colt and there is much to like about the way he runs his races. A fairly comfortable winner of the Norfolk Stakes (Group 2) over 5f, this extra furlong should not be a concern and may bring about an improved effort. Highclere Thoroughbred Racing is having a magical season with its two-year-olds and with Memory winning the Cherry Hinton in sparkling form yesterday, connections will be feeling they have the Midas Touch. A big player today.

Libranno made a pleasing start to his career when the lesser fancied of Hannon's runners winning at 25/1. This will be a test for this son of Librettist. Hannon has such an impressive string of talented two-year-olds that he must be respected because many other youngsters could have taken this spot. On form, Libranno has a mountain to climb but on trainer reputation the void may not be so extreme. An interesting runner.

Marston Moor is in the unenviable position of making his debut at Group level which is a very rare occurrence. A breeze-up purchase costing $375,000 and entered for the Gimcrack (Group 2) there is little doubt Mahmood Al Zarooni considers this colt by War Front a talent, however, this would be a truly amazing performance to win on debut - and in truth it would be a miracle.

Bet: 4:05 Warwick - Diamond Penny 1PTEW 4/1 4th
Comment: 'A statistical bet which are generally very strong but unfortunately one of the lesser lights with this Paul Cole two-year-old. The majority of these were cheap purchases and shown only limited ability - with the exception of Midnight Feast.

Peter Winkworth's two-year-old didn't show a jot at Sandown on debut but had something of a transformation at Salisbury next time when 2nd at 50/1. This gelding by Ishiguru is a big, strapping sort and quite a keen horse. He pulled for much of the Salisbury maiden and for an auction event that was a decent race. The winner is talented and capable of winning at a higher level and the 3rd, Fight The Chance, ran well next time when 2nd at Haydock. There is little doubt Midnight Feast has enough ability to win a race of this nature, however, the draw could be a concern. With plenty of pace, Morris may well try to get to the rail, although that may be a tall order from stall 12. At restricted odds and with the draw an issue it may be best to watch today.

Of the other form horses, none have achieved a great deal but have claims at this low level especially with the potential bias relating to the favourite.

Nothing To Hide ran an improved race at Windsor when 66/1. The winner Capaill Liath was in a different class and to be fair the place horses are most likely limited. Saying that, Nothing To Hide, a bay gelding by Barathea, is a good-looking juvenile and could well have place claims again.

Red Zeus was behind Nothing To Hide but may be open to improvement as Moore's two-year-olds can improve for the run. It would be encouraging if backed.

Another candidate with relating form lines is Valeo Si Vales. This bay colt by Oratorio was an outsider when never a factor at Salisbury on debut and on that form has something to find with Nothing To Hide. It is interesting that Osbourne's two-year-old was backed on his next start at Goodwood as the trainer is in flying form at present and looked to be going well that day when fading at the finish. This drop back to 6f may be the answer and better may be expected today.

Avalon Bay is quite fancied on the exchanges at present although the form of his race at Kempton looks moderate.

In truth, Midnight Feast is the most interesting juvenile for this race and from a lower draw would take some beating. Whether stall 12 is too much a hindrance is a matter of debate but it is certainly an obstacle. Valeo Si Vales may be capable of better and at a price, and low draw, could have each way claims.

Bet: 3:00 Lingfield - Valeo Si Vales 0.5PTEW (14/1) 7th

Comment:'A speculative bet with hope of beating the badly-drawn favourite but a very disappointing selection as there was no improvement for Valeo Si Vales.'

General thoughts: 'It has been a disappointing time of late and a number of speculative bets have just not found a winner or two. For the near future we will stick with proven form horses and best statistical selection which will bring some stability to the season.'

Handsome Jack has strong claims after a creditable 6th at Kempton on debut. An attractive son of Iffraaj, Mills two-year-old was clueless from the stalls and soon a long way off the pace. However, as the race progressed he found his stride and ran on with some zeal and was gaining fast on the leaders at the finish. His late father, was a dab hand at Wolverhampton with a good strike rate and 'like father like son' a big run can be expected today.

Byronic ran well on debut at Bath when failing to land the spoils after losing in a photo finish. This son of Byron, a 29,000gns purchase, looked fit and ready that day and took a good while to chase down the early leaders who went off at a pace. That experience will not be lost today although from a low draw it wouldn't be the greatest surprise to see this runner slightly outpaced but running on well at the finish. Beating Diamond Charlie at Bath sets a fair standard and this attractive colt has place claims.

Spokesperson, trained by Mahmood Al Zarooni, is presently favourite on the exchanges. This American-bred colt cost $125,000 and was Godolphin second string when third at Goodwood. The form of that race, bar the winner, doesn't seem to be holding up and this two-year-old will need to improve to win this. He did look to be carrying some condition so it is possible there is more to come. As this is Mahmood Al Zarooni's first season it is difficult to consider trainer trends although a number of his youngster have run much-improved races on the second start and if strongly fancied in the betting would be a sign of encouragement.

Of the other raced juveniles, Robber Stone may be capable of better. This grey colt was well backed on his second start and that is often a good sign for Channon's two-year-olds. It wouldn't be a surprise to hear this colt disappointed last time and would be interesting if backed today.

From a number of debutantes Lord Of Persia has claims. Beckett's two-year-olds have fair win and place statistics on first start and Maura Gittens does very well with her juveniles. Connections already have one talent in the stable with the highly regarded Lord Of The Stars, and this is one of the more likely types.

Mirradores may go well at a price as Muir does well at Windsor and Dwyer could have ridden Velvet Underground.

In addition, Royal Approval, trained by Morrison, is certainly worth watching today and could have ability. Moore was booked early to ride this colt which was originally sold for 800gns and later fetched 100,000gns as a breeze-up purchase. This trainer features poor statistics on debut but has been known to send out a talented debutante - as seen with the classy Stimulation - and an entry to run at Ascot and the Gimcrack Stakes (Group 2) could be significant. If backed, I can see this juvenile running a big race.

Not the most straightforward of races.

Next Edition showed promise on debut when running on well behind Tinkertown at Redcar. With the third, Local Singer, winning since, Howard Johnson's two-year-old clearly has enough ability to win a race and could improve from that first start.

Diamond Geezah has ability as proven by a decent run in the Brocklesby and then a narrow loss at Nottingham on his second start. Hills usually hits the high notes at Chester but this bay colt disappointed to some extent after getting a handy position from a poor draw, such exertions took their toll and Diamond Geezah faded in the final furlong. Having run in the Windsor Castle Listed race at Royal Ascot last time this will be an easier task, however, the step up to 7f may be something of a shock to the system and he will need to settle. A capable horse, certainly up to winning a maiden, but difficult to assess over this distance. You have to consider that the trainer knows best and if not inconvenienced by this trip should run well.

Richard Fahey continues in a rich vein of form and Cotton Spirit probably run above expectation when second at big odds last time at Carlisle over 6f. This chestnut colt by Araafa ran on well and should appreciate this 7f. The Carlisle race is difficult to assess as there isn't too much form to measure that effort.

Little Miss Take is another juvenile to have improved for the step up in distance. Quite a small filly, she was run off her feet at Chester and finished with a flourish. That didn't look the most competitive of heats although an interesting juvenile for the Dascombe stable.

Arctic Cat may go well at a price. Swinbank has a fair win rate at this course and his two-year-olds can improve a good deal for their first run.

A difficult race to assess with a mix of juveniles of varying distances and form.

Other races:

An EBF maiden for colts and fillies over 5f.

A selection of form horses on a recovery mission with beaten favourites aplenty.

Good Morning Dubai has shown ability on her three starts but seems to be making hard work of winning. From front running tactics to being held up last time at Warwick this daughter of Dubawi is a decent looker although has a slightly scratchy action. Meehan is a rare visitor to Beverley and once again Good Morning Dubai will be fancied to run a big race. It will be interesting to see which tactics are employed today. One for the shortlist but may be vulnerable over this more testing course.

Ahtoug, trained by Mahmhood Al Zarooni, is an attractive colt and travelled like a dream on debut when narrowly beaten. After that initial run a win at Newcastle looked to be a realistic hope but this two-year-old foundered to finish 3rd. The form of that race has taken a few knocks since and there are a few questions needing answers. A low draw (1) is not ideal and the drop back to 5f may bring about improvement or consequently this son of Byron may be run off his feet. This youngster has something to prove and connections will be running out of chances if he suffers another loss. A juvenile I would rather watch today.

Geoff Oldroyd has been in flying form this season and his connection with Reg Bond has reaped rewards. Lady Royale is becoming frustrating and after a narrow loss in the Hilary Needler they must be rueing that loss because this chestnut filly has struggled since. The last effort at Newacstle was poor and it may have been due to the cheek pieces, however, you would have to be brave to pin your hopes on a return to form with their removal. Lady Royale ideally needs a race run at a frantic pace as she is a resolute galloper and trundles on at a similar speed while other's tire. Having run well at Beverley on previous occasions, a return to the course may bring about a return to form although she may have regressed and not one I would chance today.

One two-year-old who could run well at a price is Ice Trooper. Having been beaten by Lady Royale on two occasions gives the impression this gelding by Iceman has a lot on his plate to reverse the form - but he may do just that. Having needed the run on debut he ran a good race second time at Beverley when showing good speed before being outpaced by Ladies Are Forever. That is a class filly, as shown by her narrow defeat in the Queen Mary Stakes (Group 2) at Royal Ascot, and it could be the case that Stubbs' two-year-old has a chance here. At Redcar, last time, he showed a good turn of foot and had most of his rivals on the ropes at 5f. This drop back to the minimum distance and the allowance for Sullivan in the saddle (who rode a fine race before) could bring about a bold show at a price. (NR)

Close To The Edge ran in a strong contest at York and showed promise on debut. Wainwright has trained a few decent two-year-olds (Loch Jipp) but only has a small string. It is difficult to know if this filly by Iffraaj, a breeze-up purchase for £30,000, was slightly flattered by her proximity to the leaders or whether she has some ability. Worth watching today.

Of the debutantes, El Viento has to be respected from the Richard Fahey stable, who keep churning out the winners. The betting is the best indicator of ability and if backed must be respected.

An EBF maiden for colts and fillies over 6f.

A number of form horses oppose here and the debutantes will need to be pretty smart to win this on their racecourse bow.

Bunce has been knocking on the door and unlucky not to have won a race in his four starts, only denied by a few talented sorts. Hannon tries this bay colt by Good Reward over 6f today. Connections must feel this step up in distance will suit although this two-year-old hasn't shown any problems with pace over the minimum distance. Perhaps this trip will bring about improvement although with quite stiff competition Bunce may find one or two better.

A breeze-up buy at £40,000, Fight The Chance, a son of Elusive City, seemed to improve for the drop back to 6f on his second start at Salisbury. The first three pulled clear of the field and the winner, Royal Exchange, who only won by a narrow margin - although could have won by further if pressed - is a talented two-year-old. Channon's youngster was fading in the final strides but looks a consistent type and should run a big race today.

Reg Hollinshead has only had one two-year-old runner so far this season - but he made it a good one in the shape of Restless Bay. Another son of Elusive City and a breeze-up purchase at 22,000gns, this brown colt has plenty of size and scope. To beat Alfraamsey on debut was a pleasing start to his career and although a long way behind Formosina, the winner went on to win the Railway Stakes (Group 2) at the Currugh on his next start. Clearly connections hold Restless Bay in some regard as he is entered for the Gimcrack (Group 2) and even though that is the first declaration stage it is a positive sign. Owner, John Marriott has owned a few decent horses - Flowing Cape to name one - and the Hollinshead team must be excited by the potential of this two-year-old. He ran on with some purpose on debut after showing inexperience and there should be improvement to come. This two-year-old has ability to win a maiden and if a little more streetwise today could run a big race.

The Richard Fahey bandwagon continues with two more juvenile winners yesterday at Redcar. Blaze Of Thunder is a good-looking colt by Ad Valorem, a breeze-up costing £26,000. This two-year-old showed a professional attitude to racing after a slow start at Ripon over 5f. That was a fair race and he led the far side until tiring in the final furlong but still showed promise. As with many of the trainer's two-year olds, he looked pretty fit for his debut but will be wiser for the experience. Connections are keen to go this extra furlong and you have to consider they know best. Blaze Of Thunder looks to have enough ability to win a race but this could well be a pretty stiff contest. The experience and potential improvement for 6f could make a difference but may need to find a little more against this field.

Last but not least is Squires Gate, who has not been seen since finishing 3rd on the first day of the season in the Brocklesby Stakes at Doncaster. There must have been a problem along the way to been off course for such a duration but this colt has proven ability. Hills has a 30% win rate at the course and if fit and ready can not be ignored.

An EBF maiden fillies' stakes over 6f(8y).

A decent race on the cards.

Florestans Match ran well on debut at Salisbury over 6f, when 3rd behind Major Conquest. This chestnut filly by Medicean is a gorgeous looking filly and will definitely win her share of races. A good buy at £28,000, and owned by Mrs R J Jacobs this two-year-old could have a touch of quality. This youngster travelled extremely well on debut before tiring in the final furlong and must run a big race today. A nice prospect for the Beckett stable.

Sir Michael Stoute has just started to run a few two-year-olds and already has one talent in the shape of Cape Dollar, who looks an exciting filly. Apace runs today in the colours of Cheveley Park Stud and is bred in the purple costing 350,000gns as a yearling. With such prestigious horses, the majority of the stable's juveniles are fancied in the betting. The general win rate on debut is respectable but not outstanding as individuals often progress with racing and difficult to assess on their racecourse bow. Certainly his win and place statistics are much better on the second start. Nonetheless, with such credentials this daughter of Oasis Dream must be respected.

Ed Dunlop has had a few two-year-old runners this season but still awaits his first winner. Mabsam was fancied on debut, a 4/1 shot, which is a sign of encouragement for this £50,000 buy, a daughter of Green Desert. She was rather slow away at Doncaster and ran on without being unduly pressed. The form of that race has taken a few knocks and difficult to asses at this time. Dunlop generally trains the lesser of Hamdan Al Maktoum's string and quite often juveniles do not improve significantly for their first start. Interesting that this filly was relatively fancied on debut but more is needed.

Clive Brittain has done well with his increased string of two-year-olds from Saeed Manana and Eshoog was given a stiff task when taking on previous winners in a novice stakes race on debut. This filly had been entered to run in the Hilary Needler Listed race at Beverley so must be held in some regard. On debut, over 5f, it all happened too quickly and Sanders didn't press this two-year-old when she was outpace early in the race. This step up to 6f will help and she could well improve a good deal on that initial performance. A difficult horse to assess but most likely has much more to offer.

Star Today is worth a mention. This filly has been off course a while and could have improved for the debut over 5f at Leicester. Meehan's two-year-olds are in better form and it is worth noting any betting moves for this filly by Invincible Spirit, an £80,000 yearling.

Of the debutantes Admirable Spirit is on of the more likely candidates although Hannon's two-year-olds are difficult to assess at times.
