Saturday's Thoughts

2:00 Ripon

A large field of mostly limited juveniles and the balance of their fortunes may rest upon the draw. There is a likelihood the field will split in two and on 'good' ground - and the first race of the day - it is difficult to know whether a high or low draw will make all the difference. For that reason alone it pays to be careful as if there is a distinct bias you may be on a loser irrespective of ability. No Poppy has a fair chance although would be much better off in an auction event. McCabe's City Legend ran in a moderate race on debut but a Mill Reef Stakes (Group 2) entry is worthy of note and there may be more to come. New Springs is owned by David Armstrong who always seems to have a talented horse or two. A difficult race to consider with the draw an unknown and for that reason a watching brief.

4:30 Chester

This looks a weak race and Power Punch and Night Carnation have leading chances. If the latter is an each-way price (unlikely) that would be a good bet. Balding's two-year-olds often improve for the run and must have strong place claims at least. 3rd
