1:50 Catterick

An EBF maiden for colts and fillies over 5f.

Quite a large field for this and a number of form horses on show.

Orchid Street must have strong claims for this after finishing a good second at Thirsk on debut, a race that has provided a number of winners since. A breeze-up purchase of 48,000gns and fairly speedy sort, she was given a considerate ride in the Hilary Needler Listed race at Beverley where she always remained mid division. Duffield clearly holds this filly in high regard and connections will be looking for a win today.

Sir Mark Prescott has been in fine form with his two-year-olds over the last few days and Miss Clairton is entitled to improve for her debut at Catterick when everything happened too fast and this daughter of Marju who was run off her feet before fairly flying home at the finish. That maiden was a pretty moderate event with a number of juveniles having been entered to run in plating class. It is something of a negative that Miss Clairton has been entered to run in a claiming race, too. There isn't much of this filly and even though Prescott features decent statistics with his juveniles on their second start, from a high draw it may be wise to tread carefully with this two-year-old.

The Moore-trained Kheya is progressing with racing and has been well backed on both starts. After a complete no-show at Ripon this bay filly ran with promise at Musselburgh. That was a moderate race in ways but she knuckled down at the finish and looks the type to give her best. From a low draw, this daughter of Kheleyf may make a bold bid from the front and could well have place claims at a fair price. It should be noted that she has a rather pronounced running action, which may be suited to better ground. An individual with a level if not limited ability, who may struggle to cope with one or two of these.

A couple who are worth a mention as speculative hopes are Novalist and Lady Kildare.

Novalist was a 100/1 shot on debut at Catterick and ran in an fair little maiden that day behind First Class Favour, who went on to run a very respectable race in the Hilary Needler, and third placed Choose Wisely who has since franked the form. Bastiman's youngster was a few lengths behind these capable sorts but has room for improvement after being too inexperienced to hold a position but ran on well in the latter stages. This chestnut colt could be a dark horse for this and even though not best drawn may have place claims if improving for that debut run.

Lady Kildare ran in the same event as Orchid Street, seemingly beaten fair and square, by a few lengths. A sturdy-looking juvenile, she showed good pace but tired in the final furlong. It would perhaps be something of a surprise for the Jedd O'Keeffe youngster to reverse the form but could have place claims at a price because the Thirsk event was quite a competitive heat.
