Weird and Amazing Facts about Horse Racing

Horse racing is a thrilling and fantastic game for many people. But as there is money involved, it becomes a great sport for betting enthusiasts. Getting to know the amazing facts about horse racing can make you peep into the all-new world of stallions.

How it started and a few records?

For the successful horses, the owners would pledge their lives. Yes, they can earn more on stud than on the racecourse, and $100 million is involved in horse racing every year. It all started with the chariot races of Rome, and they are the organized form of horse races, from where today’s horse races are derived. These races trace back to 4500 BC in Central Asia.

  • To date, there is no record that a horse more than 18 years of age has won the race.
  • A racehorse on an average weighs 1000 pounds, and the recorded that is lowest for a jockey is 49 pounds.
  • The highest aged jockey was Levi Barlingume, who raced till 80 years of age, which was until 1932.
  • Humorist was the winner of the Epsom Derby in 1921 that ran with only one lung.

Big-hearted horses have more chance to win

You will also be excited to know about the organs of the racing horses. Yes, only the horses with large hearts have a great chance to win, compared with the rest of those who have smaller or average-sized hearts.

If you are one of the groups who thinks that horse racing is not very animal-friendly, and they have stopped putting money in it. You have options to participate in other sports or you can play casino games at Betfair to get the same thrilling experience.

Slow or fast?

If you are looking for something funny then here is some amusing fact for you. Time is significant when it comes to winning a race. In 1945, the recorded time for winning that is the slowest of all time was set. Never Mind II, the horse refused to move from a fence, and the jockey had no other go, but to abandon the horse. But, to his joy, all the runners of the race had either been disqualified or fallen. So, he rushed back to complete the 2-mile race in 11 minutes and 28 seconds. This means he would have been at leisure.

Facts about different breeds

Most of the time, you will find that the thoroughbred horses are chosen for their speed, agility, and determination. They had Arabian ancestors and were produced in England. The Arabian racehorses that raced more than 1000 years ago are of just ½ the size of the thoroughbred horses. Compared with these, the quarter-bred horses that are specially bred for quarter-mile races are smaller and less muscular. For harness racing, the standardbred horses are used. They are best suited for trot than gallop racing.

Dangers associated with horse racing

While it can be seen a great sport, no one can deny that many times horse racing involves the fatal end of the horses on the racecourse, with broken spines. Horses are also killed because of the use of drugs that are meant for improving speed but are illegal and restricted. Thousands of former racehorses end up at slaughter beds. Even younger horses say of ages 3 and 4 are made to risk their lives on tracks.

Retired Accountant Wins Big After Tiny Bet

Imagine placing a tiny bet of £1 then picking five winning horses in a row on the same day, to net yourself a nice little pay cheque of nearly £60,000.

That’s what happened to Peter Titman when he managed to back all the right horses to race over the line first at York last weekend.

Playing a “Lucky 31” accumulator bet, his initial winnings were £38,901 after the horses El Astronaute, Roaring Lion, Afaak, Main Desire and Waiting for Richie all won their races on Thursday.

To make a Lucky 31 more appealing to punters, customers playing will all receive a fifty percent bonus if they can correctly pick five winners. Whilst each Lucky 31 bet will essentially cost a punter £31, Peter’s remarkable win took his eventual total to a staggering £58,352.

His long term betting pal didn’t make the races

On the day, Titman also believes his gaming luck was possibly increased by the fact his long term pal and betting friend Ian Carr didn’t make the day out as he was attending a hospital appointment.

Mr Titman who hails from Royton near Oldham in Greater Manchester spoke to the Manchester Evening News after his astonishing win and said that:
“I was always good at mental arithmetic and my uncle had me checking not only his, but his mates’ betting slips. I must have been seven or eight years of age but I could do my sums pretty well. At primary school the teachers used to ask my puzzled parents why I knew so much about horse racing and whether they were big gamblers, which they weren’t”

He went on to say that he was always top of the class in Maths at school and had actually at one point considered going into accountancy as a career.

Special win

Peter who is by his own confession a massive huge Oldham Athletic fan, jokingly said that the win was even more special to him because the bet was created by a Manchester United fan!

Laughing, he commented that
“I’m an Oldham fan and we were relegated after failing to match Rochdale’s result on the last day of the season, so taking £58,000 off a big United fan like Fred has cheered me up.”

Titman
picked up his winnings at the betting shop near his house and then went on to celebrate his win in his local pub. Then there was a good meal at a local restaurant for some of his friends.

He intends to spend the money on a new computer and will also possibly consider putting some of it towards getting a lovely holiday home in Lanzarote.

He finally added
"I’m just starting to get over our miserable stop-start FA Cup final defeat against Chelsea when we weren’t at the races and then I hear about this. Guess it proves you can always win big from a small stake at Betfred, and at least a very loyal customer is in the money.”

Tips on making a profitable career from horse race betting

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could follow your passion of only watching horses race and placing bets? After all, doing what you love is one of the secrets to a happy life.

Contrary to what most non-gamblers think, betting on horses is hard work. There’s the strain of the constant emotional ups and downs of victories and losses. There’s the nerve-wracking decision making process of which horse to back and how much to place on a bet, and much more. But what are the chances of turning this into a full-time job that’ll finance your mortgage and send your kids to college? With races such as the Kentucky Derby, and the 2017 Breeders Cup coming up perhaps you're tempted to try and follow suit.
Well the short and brutal answer is your chances are very low. Why? Because horses like people are very unpredictable and the likelihood of you winning as many bets as you need to remain financially stable is dependent far too much on the mercies of Lady Luck.
The most successful bettors and handicappers all support their passion for the races with a day job that pays the bills and provides them something to fall back on when things aren’t going too well on the track.

But there’s still hope

While I did say the chances of being a fulltime bettor were low, I didn’t say they were non-existent. If you insist on following your dream, below are just some of the things it would take to make a steady and dependable living from playing the races.
  • Finances
Well you can’t be a gambling man or woman if you don’t have the bankroll to finance your passion. The key to successfully gambling and not falling into debt is ensuring what you put into bets never exceeds what you currently have. But if you keep putting money into the races without winning, you’ll eventually be left penniless. Plenty pro gamblers often don’t earn profits of greater than 10% of what they’ve invested in races. Will that be enough to sustain you especially after you factor in your general life expenses?
  • Solid Handicapping
Handicapping is important because it points you in the direction of horses that are more likely to win. You could pay for handicapping services from a pro to help you place better bets, just make sure it’s giving you winning horses
  • Confidence and self-discipline
It’s very important you don’t let your emotions get the best of you while you are at the track. If you have a plan, stick with it and avoid being lured into playing with your prime bankroll at a race you have no genuine certainty on.
  • Money Management
There really isn’t one perfect way to manage your finances if you opt for gambling as your chosen line of profession, but you could try out the Kelly Criterion. This involves optimizing wager size on the perceived edge on a race based on fair odds assigned to your pick against the track odds.
Other management options you could pursue are the Percentage of Bankroll, and Fixed Wager Size.
  • Learn from your mistakes
There are rules to winning when betting but none of the rules are set in stone. If you try something today and it works, it doesn’t mean it’s going to work again tomorrow. So be prepared to be constantly learning and avoid making the same mistakes twice. This will save you from less regret and keep you ahead.
  • Hedging
If you are good at trifectas and exactas then hedging bets with a win bet can help you break even when other bets don’t work out like you expected.
  • Varying Exotic Wagers
Vary the amount staked in exotics depending on your expected payoffs. By doing this, you’ll be hedging your wagers for in case the favourites come in and make room for a reduced but profitable wager on longer shots.

Conclusion

Keep in mind that every successful gambler has their own winning formula which they update from time to time. If you have your own way of betting that works out perfectly for you and you are disciplined and smart with your money, I suppose you could head over to the Kentucky Derby and many more races to make a living. But just to be safe, don’t get too excited and quit your day job just yet.

What does the rest of 2017 have in store for horse racing?

There is still plenty of top racing to get stuck into during the rest of 2017 and it will be to the north of England that attention turns later in August.

York’s prestigious Ebor Meeting gets under way on Wednesday, August 23, with the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes the undoubted centrepiece of the four-day meeting.

Run over a mile-and-a-quarter on the Knavesmire, it attracts some of the best Flat horses around and could well see Churchill, Barney Roy and Ulysses go head to head.

Barney Roy heads the ante-post market at 11/4 and Richard Hannon will be looking for some payback after losing by a nose to Ulysses (3/1) in the Coral-Eclipse.

A repeats of his display in taking the St James's Palace Stakes would go down well for connections but Churchill (9/1) might also have say in proceedings especially if he can bounce back to winning ways at Glorious Goodwood.

Another Group One contest, the Yorkshire Oaks, brings together many of the leading three-year-old fillies over a mile-and-a-half.

King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Enable has been slated for an outing and is as short as 1/3 to claim the spoils.

However, Aidan O’Brien’s Coronation Stakes winner Winter, currently on offer at 12/1, might have a say in proceedings.

A few familiar faces may well line up in the Irish Champions Stakes on September 9, with Cliffs of Moher (6/1) and Jack Hobbs (10/1) thought to be in the frame for a Leopardstown run out.

The former was runner-up to Wings Of Eagles in the Derby but fourth in the Coral-Eclipse while Jack Hobbs has fluffed his lines twice since winning a Group One in Dubai back in March.

Doncaster’s Group One St Leger takes place on September 16 and the world’s oldest Classic might well see a rematch between Aidan O’Brien’s Irish Derby winner Capri (3/1) and Cracksman (6/1), who was just beaten a neck on that occasion.

Scottish racing will be to the fore in late September, with the six-furlong Ayr Gold Cup one of the season’s most sought-after sprint handicaps.

My Racing has all the best free tips available for online betting and provides betting offers and a nap of the day for all the biggest meetings.

Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire Meeting follows soon after which includes the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes but as Halloween approaches, it will be back to Ascot for British Champions Day on Saturday, October 21.

There is something for everyone, with sprints and longer distance contests and, while it is too early to safely say which stars might grace the Group One Champion Stakes, Almanzor has been priced at 8/1 to defend his crown at the Berkshire track.

The four-year-old has not been seen since claiming the spoils under Christophe Soumillon but it is sure to be a tough task with the quality on show.

National Hunt racing will take prominence later in the year, with the prestigious Ladbrokes Gold Cup at Newbury always popular for jump racing fans, while Kempton’s King George VI Chase over the festive period might well see the likes of Thistlecrack (3/1), Sizing John (4/1) and Douvan (6/1) do battle once again.

Juddmonte boosted to £1 million prize money

York's Juddmonte International, will be worth £1 million for the first time this year for the Ebor meeting.

Additional funds of £10,000 for the Darley Yorkshire Oaks and Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, with both now worth £350,000, while the Betfred Ebor is up £5,000 to £285,000.

On international rankings, the Juddmonte International is rated the best race in Britain being won by some of the biggest names in the sport with the such as Frankel, Sea The Stars, Australia and Postponed.

In boosting prize-money by £100,000, York is aiming to continue to attract the star names for the contest, which will be run on August 23 this year.

York chairman and racing manager for Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms, Teddy Grimthorpe, said: "Attracting the best horses to run in competitive races on the Knavesmire is what we are all about; so I am pleased that the unstinting support from long standing sponsors has allowed us to increase prize-money for our feature races again this year.

"The Juddmonte International will reach a notable landmark demonstrating the generous support of Prince Khalid for a race that I know he cherishes."

The Juddmonte International received a boost of £50,000 last year as part of a wider prize-money increase across the whole of the Ebor meeting.

Horse racing is a game of research

There are many sporting events out there that rake in millions and millions in gambling revenue every year. Football, in particular, stands out amongst the crowd with it being so big in the UK and across Europe.

But while football becomes increasingly unpredictable, throwing off seasoned ‘experts’ left right and centre- who saw Leicester winning the BPL and Portugal winning Euro 2016? Horse racing allows for a more measured and informed bet. After all, you don’t know what is going on in Football player’s heads, what has happened at home or at work with the team, a horse, should be easier to read.

Thus, Horse racing isn’t such a game of chance like other sports betting and your run of the mill standard gambling. It’s not like a game of roulette, for example, where winning consecutive rounds reduces your probability of success, it’s a game of skill, research and rhythm.

To win big in horse racing you have to do the research. There is so much to take into consideration when it comes to betting on the gee-gees. The racers past form, the jockeys, the strengths and weaknesses of the horse and the condition of the course all factor in to the potential success of your bet.

One great way of getting to grips with all the ins and outs of the races and the events in question is to physically attend and get speaking with experts and other horse racing aficionados. It’s this social element that can also help you better learn potential tips and rumours about certain racers and riders which could greatly affect the outcome of a race.

It’s important in any aspect of gaming to keep your head especially when nothing appears to be going right for you. Don’t bet angry and make sure that the bets you are placing are made when you are in control and thinking straight. Nothing upsets a professional gambler more than suffering certain patchy spells and even losing streaks, it can knock their confidence and wind up letting them make thoughtless bets and losing more than they originally intended.

Horse racing is the ideal way in which to better understand various elements that can affect the outcome of a bet that you place. The races themselves are fast, frantic and fun and it’s very easy to get lost in the excitement of race day. But the skills that you can attain from betting on horse races can seriously help develop your skills and intuition to become a better gambler.

Woman Shares Selfie with Winning Horse Race Ticket, Has the $825 Stolen

Here’s a friendly piece of advice: if you bet on sports, never post a photo of your winning ticket online. That’s what an Australian woman found out the hard way yesterday. After sharing a photo of herself with her winning ticket on Facebook, someone used the photo to claim her $825 prize.

Triple M reports that Perth, Australia woman named Chantelle attended the prestigious Melbourne Cup horse race yesterday and placed a 100-to-1 bet on Prince Of Penzance. When that horse won the race, Chantelle’s ticket was worth $825. What she didn’t realize was that the barcode in the photo can be used at an automated machine to claim the winnings, and that’s exactly what someone did after seeing the photo.

“To the low life who is obviously my friend on Facebook and used my photo to claim our winnings. You’re a massive dick. You ruined my day,” Chantelle wrote in a follow-up post on Facebook.

She tells Triple M that police were able to track down where the money was claimed and believe that they will be able to track down the unscrupulous (but clever) thief. Proves the point who you need to be very careful.

Ed Rhodes:

Same with lottery tickets, or tickets to concerts/sporting events. If it has a bar code, cover it up.

5:55 Kempton (14th November) Free Horse Racing Tips

NO 1 The Punter's Choice!!!!!
An EBF Maiden Stakes (Div 1) over 7f.

Melvin The Grate was a costly yearling purchase at 200,000gns racing in the familiar silks of Mrs Fitri Hay. This son of Danehill Dancer wasn't overly fancied on debut at Folkestone but ran a pleasing race, staying on in the closing stages, but never likely to catch all the way winner Banovallum. Andrew Balding is a fantastic trainer of two-year-olds. He can prime them to win on debut but many of their representative improve for their first start and put that experience to good use. From a statistical point of view I would be very surprised if this bay colt wasn't placed. The odds are nothing special but if you are looking for a good, strong, confident bet that would be my selection.

6:55 Kempton

A Median Maiden Stakes over 1m. A number of leading trainers are featured in this sizeable field of colts and fillies. Only four juveniles have race experience in what is a restricted race type, which is likely to hold down a number of the debutantes. The betting will be a key factor for those from the more fashionable yards. I wouldn't entertain any priced over 13/2 SP. Kuantan One has been relatively fancied on both starts and an expensive yearling purchase at 150,000gns. It is a positive that this son of Strategic Prince started his career at York, which is a good sign for this stable. I fancied his chances at Lingfield, late October, and witnessed a rather frustrating performance. He was outpaced over two furlongs out but rallied in the closing stages for a renewed challenge to finish 4th. Time may tell that wasn't a bad race for the grade and this looks a similar level. A wide draw isn't ideal and it will be interesting to see what De Sousa has up his sleeve. Paul Cole has said this horse will be a better three-year-old and that brings slight concerns giving the impression he needs time to progress. The betting suggested a big run last time and connections must have been disappointed. If he sits handy this looks a fair chance but I would have slight reservations. Probably best to take a watching brief unless drifting to biggish odds.
