So the Big Brother line-up has been revealed and ''surprise surprise'' (not really) Frankie Dettori takes centre stage. No doubt Channel 5 will be betting on the chirpy Italian bringing in the punters. But will this be a gamble too far for the once positive face of racing? After cutting his ties with Godolphin and falling from grace with a six-month ban from French racing authorities in December for testing positive for an unknown substance this could prove a difficult time. The 42 -year-old would have seemed an unlikely contestant being the second racing celebrity to make the grade, following in the footsteps of ex-channel 4 racing presenter John McCririck appearing in 2005.
Many commentators have expressed concern that if all doesn't bode well in the house it could reflect negatively on racing. He was quoted as saying ''he wouldn't miss anything'' when questioned about his impending stay from his family. Looking as though he had piled on the pounds his appearance contrasted starkly with those of a top-class jockey.
However, it has been reported that part of Dettorie's payment has gone towards Peter O'Sullivan's Trust, the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy and the charity founded by Barney Curley - Direct Aid For Africa. Perhaps this could be a perfect opportunity to redeem himself.
With Dettori and Rylan forced to send six constants to live in the basement while other housemates live in ''luxury'' he is unlikely to be popular with all.
Dettori has been made second favourite at odds of 5/1. X Factor loser Rylan Clarke heads the betting to win the public vote.
Will his stay in the Big Brother house be a winner for racing?
