The first division of this EBF Maiden Stakes over 1m on good ground.
A large field of colt with three fillies, the majority of the field once raced, with a couple of promising juveniles who have solid claims.
Greatwood will be many a punter's idea of the winner. This son of Manduro trained by Luca Cumani was unfancied early on the exchanges but the word must have got out this juvenile owned by Highclere Thoroughbreds had ability because because he was substantially backed just before the off. This 85,000gns purchase wasn't best away and given time to find his stride. Patrick Hills gave this youngster a superb introduction and this March foal fairly clawed up the hill chasing home a decent filly in the shape of Penny Rose. By all accounts that was a fine debut effort beating Intimidate into third place. This step up to one mile is sure to be appreciated. The only negative is that Cumani has a poor win rate with his fancied juveniles on their second start. However, this bay colt looked a talent and I would consider he has the class to buck that trend.
If you consider Greatwood a better horse than Intimidate then So Beloved - trained by Roger Charlton - looks held after being beaten a number of lengths on debut. This home bred from Juddmonte Farms Ltd was quite fancied when making his racecourse bow at Newbury, only tiring approaching the final furlong. This stable's juveniles often improve for the run and although needing to progress could have place claims if priced 13/2 & less.
Conclusion: This looks a fine opportunity for Greatwood to gain his first win and although from a statistical point of view this juvenile would not be a bet I would consider he looks a talented type who could well book the trend.
