Thursday's Thoughts

4:30 Wolverhampton
A moderate Selling Stakes race with winning prize money of £1,619. Bill Page has been well backed after being relatively fancied on his two previous starts. A $70,000 son of Proud Citizen, it would seem connections have decided to drop to this lowly level and will no doubt be expecting a big run. Bill Page has shown an element of ability and has claims but even these poor races give no guarantees. So Is She, trained by Alan Bailey, has been running over a range of distances: 5f to today's hike to 1m(141y). On her best form this bay filly may have claims but she is a rather indifferent sort having had plenty of chances and always throwing in the towel. A Little Bit Dusty is in good heart and a speedy type. Turner knows the strengths and weaknesses of his juveniles and I can see another bold front-running performance and could be a short price in-running especially if none of the others are keen to set the pace.

No strong opinion on this race although Magic Cross is a determined little filly and has the talented Julie Burke in the saddle. Paul Cole rarely keeps his juveniles running this time of year for the fun of it and if backed Pineapple Pete could run a big race.

A poor maiden race - but strangely intriguing in a mad kind of way. Betting - and form - suggests this is a two-horse race between Wolf Slayer and Lady Platinum Club. Connections will be pleased to get a win from one of these - unless there is a surprise which isn't beyond the realms at this level - and a tricky one to call. Lady Platinum Club ran well last time when just losing out in a tight finish and is a gritty type. Wolf Slayer is definitely the better looking of the two and certainly has more speed but has been questionable in the final furlong especially when employing bold-running tactics. I would be tempted to lay Wolf Slayer at huge odds-on in-running and hope Kingscote comes out all guns blazing, gains an easy lead, and tires rapidly in the final furlong. A chance to win big money for a few quid is never a bad idea. After saying that, it would be no surprise to see holding-up tactics as seen on her last start. Interesting race for a couple of juveniles that deserve a win.
