An EBF Maiden Stakes over 6f 3y on heavy going.
Huntsman's Close has been a costly bet for many a punter. There is little doubt Michael Bell's son of Elusive Quality is well regarded but his temperament has been questionable, ruining his chances, particularly his first two starts. He was much too keen in those contests which left him weak at the finish. Having been no bigger than 7/2 on all starts it has been hard work for his followers. Little by little his keen tendencies have seemingly been tamed. Spencer let this bay colt bowl along and had every horse in trouble bar Van Der Neer last time out. Hannon's colt fairly cantered past Huntsman's Close and has since proven to be a promising colt taking a stakes race, unbeaten on his second start. Today lady luck may be on the side of Huntsman's Close with Hayley Turner taking the ride. This American bred has run well on all ground and certainly wasn't hampered on the soft at Yarmouth on debut. In fact of all his performances this seaside track has seen some of his best efforts. A naturally pacey juvenile, I can see Turner allowing him to bowl along with the lead and then try to gain a winning edge at the two pole and then hang on in these testing conditions. This looks a fine opportunity to gain that elusive first win.
