The Sunday Review

The two-year-old racing season is just over one week old and we've already seen our share of talented juveniles. I say talented in relative terms because at this early stage it is best to tread careful until form lines are tested to give additional support to the merit of these winners. However, Brocklesby winner My Boy Bill caught the eye. This could be a fair juvenile. From the same race, I liked the look of Clive Cox's Well Acquanited. He  wasn't best suited by a wide draw, but a determined sort, strong through the neck and looked well. Cox knows his juveniles - a consistent trainer - and it is unusual for him to have a runner in the Brocklesby. I would take that as a pointer to a precocious horse. He will be winning soon.

There were a few good-looking juveniles on show at Kempton (yesterday). Marvelino is a nice physical specimen, quite strong. John Best's Hats Off didn't achieve a great deal but stood out from the crowd. A big, strong juvenile with good physic. I would expect him to improve a good deal next start.

Mark Johnston had a brace of two-year-old winners on Saturday: Bailey's Jubilee & Storm Moon. Both won in style, looking very forward, fairly bouncing from the stalls, travelling well and running-on with enthusiasm to the line. You would never have believed they were debutantes. That was most likely a reflection of pure talent but they knew their jobs. Johnston said that they hadn't done anything different to previous years although had pushed on a little with training when they seemed be lagging behind. In previous years he hasn't unveiled a talented juvenile until May, so whether this year's crop are particularly forward or just simply a good lot only time will tell. Storm Moon was particularly impressive, cruising along and has size and scope to progress.
