A Wandering Mind... Clive, Be As Optimistic As You Like

A Wandering Mind...

Picture the scene. It's just after the 1:20 Newmarket. There's Clive, Russell & Saeed Manana on course, while I'm at home but with a similarly goofy smile on my face. In fact, in a truly anthropomorphic moment, is that a smirk appearing on Semayyel's mush? She certainly looks very pleased with herself as she enters the winner's enclosure. A great win for one and all and thankfully I went for a win and place bet on this filly. Clive Brittain had been raving about this daughter of Green Desert to all who would listen but with being on the ''-10 List'' it probably wasn't the biggest surprise many punters gave him the cold shoulder. That said, a few people kept the faith - beyond me - as it wouldn't have been surprising to see a hugely speculative price up for grabs.  After a string of Group entries, Brittain, once again, made favourable comments in this month's Racing Ahead magazine stating that his filly was above average with Listed/Group aspirations. He is fondly known as the eternal optimist but a cunning fox, too. You can never quite tell where the optimism starts and the ability ends but I have a feeling he was quietly confident of a big run. It was additionally pleasing to see Russell Price in the saddle after taking a shine to this filly on the gallops. Price had been a trainer for a number of years but due to the recession is presently work riding for Brittain with plans to go back to training ranks in the future. I was left with the impression that it was a special day on many levels.

I had one other bet: 1:50 Newmarket. I thought Fashion's Flight would go well. More of a statistical bet than a blatant form pick but hopeful of a big run. My win and place bet didn't hit the mark, pipped for third in a blanket finish.

A good day.
